New Year. New me. Maybe?
2020 was a rough year for everyone. We all had to adjust, learn to live through a world wide pandemic. So I know I wasn’t the only one who suffered. I wrote 2020 off. Sat on my couch, watched trashy TV with my hubby, played some video games, and just rolled with it. I didn’t write or create or even try to advertise or promote.
The New Year rolled around and I went into 2021 optimistic. Wrote out my yearly goals. Positive I would find my writing mojo, my voice again. I would write all the books. I would create and thrive and meet all my goals I had set at the start of the year.
Let’s just say that 2021 wasn’t any better than 2020.
I didn’t meet any of my goals. I didn’t find my writing voice. I struggled more in 2021 than in 2020.
That left me feeling miserable, like I was a failure.
Those feelings made everything worse. My brain couldn’t form words, couldn’t focus on my stories, my characters. I literally could not do one of the main things that brings me joy. Instead, I felt even more depressed. 2021 ended and I hadn’t really accomplished anything.
Now it’s 2022.
It should be a New Year, New Me, right?
I should be pushing to be more than I was in 2020 and 2021.
But that’s not who I want to be. I want to be the old me from before 2020, before the world went to shit around me.
I want to write two novels at once. I want to enter contests again. I want to fall in love with my characters again. I want to create worlds again. I want almost every waking moment in my life to center around my passion. My job.
I want to be a writer again.
To make sure that my writing is a priority and not just an afterthought.
So instead of New Year, New Me, I want to focus on New Year, old me.

Pricked By Thorns: A Light Paranormal Romance (Redeeming Cupid: Book 3)

Ravaged by guilt, she told the winged freak where to shove his heart-tipped arrows and promised herself she would never offer the berries to anyone ever again. Until she meets Theo Castas. Playboy photographer and master at talking-a-girl-out-of-her-panties. A man who sends her rage-o-meter deep into the red zone. The real-life version of the dream man Alicia believes could break her curse.
But will Alicia break her promise — and risk Theo’s life — all to save her own heart?

Alicia Garis, a competitive surfer and sports model, has a much better idea of what Cupid is capable of as she has been under his curse since the age of 6. If she doesn’t find her soul mate and feed him poisonous berries by the age of 25, she will live without the gift of love for the rest of her life. Having thought she had found her perfect match once, Alicia was responsible for the death of her fiancé…and she vowed to never put another person at risk. Despite her plans, life in general falls apart when she meets photographer Theo Castas. He is obnoxious, a player, arrogant…and quite possibly the man of her dreams.
This short work by Jenn Windrow hits all the marks I expect a paranormal romance to hit. The element of the supernatural is very present but doesn’t overwhelm the story. The characters have believable dialogue and the necessary tension between them. Other works are referenced but aren’t necessary to get a complete story out of the novel. But most importantly, this work is a fun and engaging read.
I'd loved the two previous books, so I was more than a little excited to get my hands on this latest installment in the series. This one is more like the first book in that it’s more of a straight-forward romance with some paranormal elements. Yet, like the second book, it’s also more serious in nature. You can witness the sparks between Alicia and Theo from the very first moment they’re introduced to one another. And the sarcastic sniping and back-biting carries them through most of the book. Occasionally this pair left me dizzy with their push-me/pull-you dynamic that had them swinging from lust to loathing and back again – it was never as simple as love and hate. Add in the vengeful plotting of a bitter, jealous ex-best friend and the drama quotient goes up another notch. I loved seeing both Alicia and Theo learn how to come out from behind the fortresses that protected their hearts and were able to see one another for the lovable human being they were behind the masks.
Kristen LewendonAmazon readerLoved it!I absolutely loved this story! I couldn’t put it down! Alicia is a surfer/sports model. She has been cursed by Cupid. From the time she was 6 she’s known that she has to find her soul mate by her 25th bday and feed him the berries that are left on her pillow every morning or she will live a life without love. In Alicia’s dreams she has her idea guy. He is perfect and they meet every night under the willow tree. Alicia’s agent tells her to meet at her office one day for an amazing opportunity to work with the photographer Theo. She thinks they can take each other to the next level. In walks Theo, drum roll please....... he is the spitting image of her dream guy with the one exception of being an arrogant ass. They clash but end up working together. The photos are beyond amazing. He’s hired to be her personal photographer for the surfing competition coming up. As they work together, they get closer and dream Theo starts to fade away. She’s afraid of the curse because of something that happened in her past. True love prevails ~ I love the ending! I highly recommend this story!

Maybe she didn't try THAT hard, but she's a girl carrying the burden of a once-broken heart. And we all know how difficult it is to get past that kind of hurt. So, Noel (our fiesty, sardonic, hilarious heroine), go ahead honey and make that effort. We all understand. Vampire Alexis Black might have won the battle, but can she survive the war?
After flipping her twin brother from foe to friend and staking her sadistic sire, Alexis Black hoped things would become a little less vamp-centric. But when her I-saw-you-die sister, Lysette, shows up alive and allied with her enemy, the vengeful vamp Delano Melazi, Alexis finds herself up to her fangs in undead.
Delano has declared war against humans. With the help of Lysette, now a powerful witch, he plans to turn Chicago into the first vampire-controlled city. Over Alexis’ ashed body. To stop them, Alexis must fight a different kind of battle…one that can’t be won with strength or stakes. If she loses, the outcome wouldn’t simply be death, but the total enslavement of the human race.
Evil’s Avenging Angel is the third book in the award-winning Alexis Black Novels, an urban fantasy series that has everything great about the genre…attitude, action, and ass-kicking.

The author could publish a dozen books in this series on the same day and it still wouldn’t be enough, or fast enough, to satisfy my insatiable thirst for more about Alexis. I love this world and all the twisted intrigue and politicking that Alexis always managed to end up in the middle of. I adore the “family” that Alexis has drawn around her. They love her, they support her, they keep her humble. Alexis is an amazing heroine, but she wouldn’t be able to accomplish everything she does if she didn’t have them behind her. As much as I want to gush about every last thing that tickled my fancy in this book, I know I don’t dare because it would give away all the best parts. (P.S. There are no bad parts.) I’ve reached the end and already I NEED to know what happens next.

BUT book 2 was fantastic very good story Windrow fixed my issues with book 1 and put out a very good story great characters book 3 was just as good I don't understand the bad reviews this book was well written lots of character growth along with all the action, drama, romance and yes humor (Nathan) so I don't get the bad reviews. Don't go off them this was a really good story but you do need to read/listen to all three. So do yourself a favor: get the Audible books; narration was very good. Hope there will be more of Alexis Black and company; her story isn't done yet. Highly recommend.

Her books are written well, filled with great action, and have interesting characters. I love the characters in this book, and by the end, I even was rooting for Caleb who can be…well, Caleb. LOL! An army of undead intent on stalking and staking her. Now she spends every night with her rag-tag duo trying to send those monsters to an ashy grave. The only positive—their deaths fulfill the kill-or-end-up-dead contract she signed with a less-than-angelic-angel to regain her humanity.
But Delano is small veins compared to the latest complication in her life…her twin brother Andre. A Brother who leads her enemy’s army. Now Alexis has a new mission—save Andre by finding his last spark of humanity or follow orders and do what she does best…kill vampires.

If she can fulfill her end of the bargain, her humanity is restored, if not she will be destroyed.

This is a well written, well told action packed story that immediately grabs your attention and holds it to the end. The storylines are interesting, imaginative and original. Jenn Windrow created a fascinating world with supernatural creatures, vampires, angels & shifters who live amongst humans. The lead character, Alexis Black, an anti-vampire vampire, who made a deal with the an angel so she could be returned to humanity. Part of her deal is to not kill humans and to capture vampires and work with a human partner, Reaper. She meets some interesting character, including an old vamp friend turned ghost, who is one of my favorite characters. The action in this book is non-stop, there is plenty of drama, suspense and some romance too. Jean Windrow, thank you for this great & entertaining story.
BetteAmazon readerGood ReadI really enjoyed reading this book. I always enjoy books about assassins. The fact that an assassin in getting rid of the bad guys is just so good. The main character was great and I really liked her.
Kindle CustomerAmazon readerEvil's Unlikely AssassinWindrow has a superb story-line, filled with creativity, originality and intriguing characters. The pace is very quick, but easy to follow. There is action and suspense lurking in the shadows and in every corner. With war waging among the vampires and humans for freedom, Alexis doesn’t know who she can trust. The story appears to be written fairly well. Since this review compliments the audiobook, Stephens provides wonderful voice relay for all of the characters within the story. Her narration makes the novel lively and enjoyable for the reader. This is the first installment in the Alexis Black Series; therefore, the reader can jump right in to the action. If you are a reader of paranormal romance, suspense and fantasy, you may enjoy this story.

Dear Future Author from Amanda Fleet
It’s 2007. A story is burning your brain, so you write it. You live it, breathe it, dream it. It won’t let you go. You wonder if you’ll ever see it in print. Whether you’ll ever walk into a bookshop and see your book there, ready to be bought.
Well, sorry kiddo. No. Not that book.
But others.
Oh, others come, do not fear. There are so many books inside you.
That one you write in 2007? Yeah. You’ll work out soon that you’re a planner and not a seat-of-your-pants writer and that 150,000 is really rather too long for a thriller. But you learn a lot from writing that book. You learn about characterisation, settings, dialogue… and yeah, plotting! You learn how to sit down and write, even when it feels hard. You learn how to write something, even when you only have ten minutes in the day to call your own.
And okay, that book doesn’t ever leave the laptop. And to be honest, the next one may never be published either (though perhaps it will, when you get the time). But the others? Oh, they get published. People buy them. Yes, indeed! People hand over money for something you have written and you know what’s even better? Many of them love what you’ve written.
Well, okay, some don’t, but you can’t please everyone all of the time. Grow a thicker skin.
So, hang in there, kiddo. I won’t lie to you and tell you it isn’t going to be tough. It is. There are good days… there are some absolutely brilliant days, actually. And there are some pretty rubbish ones. But you get there. You get there. Next year your sixth book will be published. Your sixth.
But none of this happens if you give up. So don’t.
Dear Future Author from Jenn Windrow
Dear Future Author
You entered a contest that everyone thought you would final in. Not just any contest. THE contest! One of the biggest in the industry. The story you submitted had either won or top five’d in every single contest you entered it in that year. Great comments and feedback from every judge. You were so positive it was a winner. At the very least a finalist.
Then the day came for the announcements. The BIG call that proved you made it. That you were good enough.
But that call never came.
It was like a gut punch to the chest from a prize fighter.
But the pain wasn’t physical. It ripped you apart emotionally. Shredded your self-confidence. Made you question your passion. Even contemplate giving up on writing as a career.
You literally laid on the couch and cried. Ugly sobs full of tears and snot and self-doubt. Self-doubt that had found a raw opening, wiggled in, and taken root. Festered. Grew.
Then three days later you got your first offer of publication for that very same story. And a couple days after that a second. Then a third. A fourth. And finally…a fifth.
You were so confident no one wanted your words or world. That losing that contest was the end of everything. But honestly if you had won that contest you would have never accepted any of the offers. You would have waited for the BIG offer. An offer that might never have come.
But that wasn’t your path.
Since that contest you’ve published six books. Two under your own publishing house. You’ve grown to be a developmental editor, not just taking on your own clients, but working for a small press. You’ve started teaching other writers. Even figured out how to create your own audiobooks, working with a fantastic narrator. And you’ve learned to run a business, market you own books, and navigate the world of online ads. You’ve taken chances, put yourself out there, and grown more than you could ever have imagined.
So Dear Future Author, remember don’t ever let a contest or review or someone else’s negative opinion make you doubt your talent. Your ability to tell a tale. Your ability to reach for the moon, the stars, or the whole damn galaxy.
Make you forget the absolute joy that writing brings to you.
And even though there are still some days that suck, always remember that you’ve walked through the storm, and when you came out on the other side, there was a rainbow waiting to embrace you.
