JENA’S REVIEW

The Living and the LostThe Living and the Lost by Ellen Feldman

In 2020, I read “Paris Never Leaves You” by Ellen Feldman, a book that remains at the top of my “best-loved book” list. The book still resonates with me and so I was eager to read Ms. Feldman’s latest book, “The Living and the Lost”, a World War 2 Historical Fiction and Jewish Literature book. Would this book have the same impact?

Yes. It’s truly another haunting and thought-provoking book. “The Living and the Lost” is not as haunting and beguiling as “Paris”, it is much rougher, sharper, cutting. But it leaves an even bigger impact and will have you pondering love and hate, cruelty and compassion, bravery and betrayal, and country and individuals.

The story begins in post-war Berlin, a devastated wreck in the midst of the rubble of Europe. The world is learning of the atrocities of the Nazis, but for main character Mieke “Mille” Mosbach, the insane Nazi extermination of Jewish citizens was part of her life. She and her brother have come to Berlin, to work with the American reconstruction of Berlin. David served in the Army during the war, and Millie is there as an adjunct to the Army.

Millie and David’s story emerges in flashback through the book. Their story, and the stories of other characters in the book, American and German, show us the horror and the search for hope in devastation. Should you hate Germany the country? Should you despise individual Germans? Should you condemn yourself for your actions? What is it like to be lost and still living?

This book is stark and piercing; so detailed and well-researched and well-written it reads like a nonfiction book or a memoir. I have read many historical novels about World War II and how the unfathomable could happen. “The Living and Lost” needs to be read by all. Highly recommend.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance review copy. This is my honest review

#BlogTour #Review #Lil’sBusTrip

Lil’s Bus Tripby Judy LeighJudy Leigh is back, with her trademark spirit of joie de vivrefunwarmth and timeless lessons in how to live. All with a lovely English Accent.Judy Leigh’s books have been described as, “Brilliantly funny, emotional and uplifting……Brimming with warmth, humor and a love of lifeIt’s always a good time for a road trip…

When 82-year-old Lil decides to book herself, her 65-year-old daughter, Cassie, and her friend Maggie on a bus trip across Europe, she hopes for a little adventure to counteract the monotony of life in sheltered accommodation.

Along with three members of the Salterley Tennis Club and the Jolly Weaver five-a side football team, whose ideas of a good time are rather different to Lil’s and strikingly at odds with each other’s, the merry band of travelers set out on their great adventure.

From moving moments on the beaches of Normandy, outrageous adventures in Amsterdam, to the beauty of Bruges and gastronomic delights of France, the holiday is just the tonic Lil, Maggie and Cassie needed.

And as the time approaches for them to head home, Lil makes an unexpected discovery – even in her advancing years, men are like buses – there isn’t one for ages then two come along at once. Is Lil ready to share her golden years, and can the ladies embrace the fresh starts that the trip has given them. Or is it just too late to change…

Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to “ride along” on this bus trip!!

JENA’S REVIEW

Lil's Bus TripLil’s Bus Trip by Judy Leigh
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Yay! A new book by Judy Leigh! And if you are a fan of the author as I am, you won’t be surprised to learn that, “Lil’s Bus Trip” is the perfect comfort read! Definitely a porch read, with your favorite beverage and…Belgian chocolates?

The book blurb tells you all about it, but again, you will be happy to know that this book contains all the good feels. There are a mini-bus load of characters, but the author presents them so vividly, that you will remember each one. You will love 82-year old Lil , who is at the heart of it- funny, caring, perky, and she doesn’t let past sadness get her down. Her daughter Cassie is just like her, a warm and talented lady. Both mother and daughter are so close and caring- they share plenty of happiness, and hope. Lil’s friend Maggie can use some of Lil’s spunk.

The rest of the gang will entertain you as well- the young, middle-aged and a few more golden-agers. They each have their hopes and dreams, too. A few shenanigans, many funny moments, and times of thoughtful reflection round out this rollicking story. These characters aren’t as quirky as the some of the ones in Ms. Leigh’s previous books, and I liked them better. As the bus jostles through France, Belgium and Holland, you will be so happy you are part of the trip, enjoying the food and sights!

The Show Girl by Nicola HarrisonThe Show Girlby Nicola HarrisonWhat the Reviewers are Saying…

“Harrison beautifully portrays the trials and tribulations of a Ziegfeld Follies dancer in her new novel, which is brimming with juicy details of Roaring Twenties New York City. Fans of City of Girls will adore this exploration of love and ambition.” –Fiona Davis, New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue

“A delicious and entertaining exploration of the life of a Ziegfield girl with Harrison’s trademark ability to plunge the reader deep into the experiences of her characters. The Show Girl is a fast-paced and engaging read that will leave readers giving a standing ovation to Olive and to all women who choose to live life on their own terms.” –Susie Orman Schnall, author of The Subway Girls and We Came Here to Shine

I’m delighted to share a Jazz Age story. Come meet the modern girl of the Roaring Twenties, Olive Shine, in Nicola Harrison’s Historical Fiction, “The Show Girl.” The snazzy cover of this book features a show girl, with her twenty pounds of feathers atop her head. America was coming of age in the 1920’s and so were young women like Olive. But new times can mean new challenges. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance review copy.

JENA’S REVIEW

The Show GirlThe Show Girl by Nicola Harrison
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Come meet the modern girl of the Roaring Twenties, Olive Shine, in Nicola Harrison’s Historical Fiction, “The Show Girl.” The snazzy cover of this book features a show girl, with her twenty pounds of feathers atop her head. America was coming of age in the 1920’s and so were young women like Olive. But new times can mean new challenges.

Olive dreamed of being a show girl and the books begins with her barging into Ziegfeld’s office at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City to present herself as the next show girl in his famous Follies troupe. Sometime audacity works, and Olive thinks her dream life has begun.

This book will have you totally enraptured with the 1920’s in New York City. The nightlife, the speakeasies, the fancy restaurants, the modern and exciting vibe are all depicted so vividly. The details of Olive’s show girl life and the production of the fantastic Ziegfeld shows are enthralling and well-written.

But there is more to Olive than glitz and glamour. She’s feisty, ferocious about achieving her dreams, and a bit wild and madcap. She came from a staid, middle class family and she harbors a tragic secret. When she meets wealthy and all-around wonderful Archie, she feels love for the first time. But what happens when her life and dreams collide? And we also know something that Olive doesn’t- October,1929 is coming soon. Can Olive the show girl keep her dreams alive or must her dreams change?

“The Show Girl” features a one-of-a kind main character and a lively story. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance review copy. This is my honest review.

#SummerReleases #StrongWomen #BookReviews #MustReads

Presenting Three Books I am an avid reader, and I enjoy most of the books I read. But then there are the truly special ones. The scenes that make me stop reading, sigh and drift away with the characters and their conflicts; the books that have vivid, daring, appealing women main characters. I highly recommend these new books that are releasing this summer, 2021. Thanks to NetGalley, Amistad, St. Martin’s Press and Gallery Books for an advance review copy.A memoir from a real NASA hero. You know her from the film, “Hidden figures”. What an honor to read this book.

My Remarkable Journey: A MemoirMy Remarkable Journey: A Memoir by Katherine Johnson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

More than just a “remarkable journey”, this is the memoir of a “remarkable woman” who lived a “remarkable life.” Known in scientific circles for her advanced mathematical knowledge and her immense contributions to the NASA space program, Katherine Johnson became beloved by all of America following the release of her story in the acclaimed movie, “Hidden Figures.” Katherine tells her story in a clear and friendly style. The trajectory of her long life, paired with the history of America for better and worse, makes for a meaningful and important story. (Ms. Johnson died recently, after her memoir was published.)

Born in 1918, in West Virginia, and living much of her adult life in Virginia, Ms. Johnson experienced segregation and racist attitudes. But Katherine Johnson came from a strong family which gave her a secure foundation for her life, filled with love,, pride, confidence and an excellent education. She passed these gifts on to her own children. Family, faith, friendship a passion for mathematics and a love for NASA guided her life even when the sad history of race in America pained her.

Katharine Johnson received awards and academic accolades. Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented by President Barack Obama in 2015 was a profound moment for her and a proud time for all us. I am so grateful to NetGalley and Amistad for the opportunity to read the inspiring story of Katherine Johnson. This is my honest review.

Historical Fiction during an interesting time period, from lyrical author Karin Tanabe. What does it mean to be a “woman of intelligence?”

A Woman of IntelligenceA Woman of Intelligence by Karin Tanabe
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I will happily read any book by Karin Tanabe and her latest lyrical historical thriller, “A Woman of Intelligence” is another excellent, must-read book. This book features an interesting time period and well-drawn, fascinating characters.

It’s the late 1940’s and early 1950’s in America; known for the “Red Scare”, it’s an era that we may not think about much today. We see the world through the eyes of the main character, Katharina “Rina” Edgeworth. Rina represents many young women of her day. Born in New York City of immigrant parents, she learned multiple languages and was Ivy League educated.

New York is an exuberant place to be after World War II. Hope and delight abound, and Rina drinks it all in. She works for the newly created United nations as an interpreter, and in the evening, she plays in the “playgrounds” of Manhattan.

But Rina is not just a party girl. She is committed to helping the world come together after the War and she takes pride in her work at the U.N. Marriage does not call to her until she meets and falls in love with a dedicated doctor from a wealthy upper-crust family, Tom Edgeworth. Rina happily marries him, and marriage leads to children, and children lead to a major change in her life.

Is she in a gilded cage? Yes, if she lets herself be. A chance opportunity leads her to work covertly for the FBI. The FBI is investigating Communist groups and Soviet infiltrators. She thrives in her new secret life. Will she leave her privileged captivity? Is her husband Tom more a captive than she is?

Although Rina, with her spirit, intelligence, passion is a wonderfully complex and fascinating character, New York City also shines in a lead role. I enjoyed this book because of the fascinating characters, the exciting story line and the reflections on a woman’s life. Thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advance review copy. Part folktale, part riveting action, and always compelling…a young woman meets her destiny during World War II.

The Forest of Vanishing StarsThe Forest of Vanishing Stars by Kristin Harmel
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Reviews for “The Forest of Vanishing Stars” by Kristin Harmel are universally 5 stars. I agree- this was a creative, lyrical and profound book that I will always remember.

With an aura of a fairytale or folktale, filled with gritty characters and experiences, this book will haunt you with its beauty and wisdom. “Once up on a time” there was a mysterious young woman who lived in the forest and spoke to nature and nature spoke back to her. Yona is the main character and she lived in the isolated forest in Poland, with an old crone from age two until the start of World War II. The crone has prepared her with many skills, from how to build a shelter, survive on the flora and fauna, even how to kill a man. But why has the crone taken her and educated her? When the war begins, Yona meets her destiny.

World War II is shown through the eyes of Yona, who knows nothing of politics or governments. But she does know the beauty of the first spring, day, snow falling from stars, and the need to love and connect with others. She becomes a guide for Jews escaping into the forest.

Finding one’s purpose, through the filter of love, caring and honesty is the heart of this historical fiction book. I commend the author for creating a story that is filled with the details of a life in the woods, the hearts of people, and the source of it all.

Thanks to NetGalley and Gallery Books for an advance review copy. This is my honest review.

The Islandby Mary Grand

The Island – where everyone knows everyone, and secrets are impossible to keep…

‘Be careful, you don’t know them as well as you think. Remember – anyone can kill.’

Juliet has returned to the Isle of Wight from years abroad to visit her sick father and to be reunited with her three sisters – Cassie, a professional musician who seems to have lost her way in life, Mira, who is profoundly deaf, is married to the local vicar but their relationship is falling apart, and Rosalind, glamorous and charming but now deeply unhappy and secretive about her life.

As Juliet’s father lies dying, he issues her a warning. There is a killer on the loose, and they may be closer than she can ever imagine. He anxiously tells Juliet that he confided a family secret in son-in-law Rhys, and now regrets ever saying a word.

Days later, as the clock strikes one in the morning, a man comes out of Rhys’s church, walks along the path and is run down by a car driven by an unidentified person. When the finger of suspicion points to Juliet, she realises the only way to clear her name is to uncover the secrets her family has been keeping from her for years. But with a killer on the loose, danger is getting closer all the time…

The Island  is set on the Isle of Wight – insular,  claustrophobic, and where secrets are hard to keep. Mary Grand’s heart-stopping who-dunnits are perfect for fans of Louise Candlish. Agatha Christie and Lucy Foley.

JENA’S REVIEW

The IslandThe Island by Mary Grand
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What’s it like to live on the lovely Isle of Wight? The summer beach tourists come and go, but you get to remain on this small bit of paradise. You can enjoy the stunning views of cliffs and ocean and take pleasure in the village life. But what if your family harbors secrets and what if there have been too many puzzling murders?

“The Island” by Mary Grand is her second psychological/domestic thriller. “The House Party” also took place on the Isle of Wight. “The Island” is a separate, stand-alone story. But it still contains all the best of Mary Grand- her ability to create believable, yet flawed, characters, her attention to presenting a vivid feeling of place, and her storytelling skills that build the fear and suspense. “The Island- where everyone knows everyone, and secrets are impossible to keep…”

Juliet is a young adult who returns to her family home and her 3 sisters and mother on the Isle of Wight. Their father and husband is on his death bed and he tries to tell Juliet of some dark secrets. Juliet feels it is her duty to look into these allegations. As she interacts with her family and friends, Juliet realizes that some secrets are deadly, and go back over 20 years. Not only that, but hideous threats hang over Juliet, her sisters, and their mother.

Actually, most of the secrets would have been possible to keep- if Juliet hadn’t been so persevering. Her mother, her three sisters, her sister’s husband, and even Juliet’s husband all have secrets that they will not reveal. But Juliet keeps on digging and questioning to find the horrible truth.

And readers, you will be glued to this story and your heart will race. You will feel as if you are right there with Juliet, as she walks the beaches and cliffs, and ponders all the clues. It is hard to be a wife, a sister, a young woman seeking her place in the world. And secrets don’t help.

Waiting to Beginby Amanda ProwseWaiting to Begin

From the bestselling author of The Girl in the Corner comes a story that asks: what would you risk for a shot at happiness?

1984. Bessie is a confident sixteen-year-old girl with the world at her feet, dreaming of what life will bring and what she’ll bring to this life. Then everything comes crashing down. Her bright and trusting smile is lost, banished by shame—and a secret she’ll carry with her for the rest of her life.

2021. The last thirty-seven years have not been easy for Bess. At fifty-three she is visibly weary, and her marriage to Mario is in tatters. Watching her son in newlywed bliss—the hope, the trust, the joy—Bess knows it is time to face her own demons, and try to save her relationship. But she’ll have to throw off the burden of shame if she is to honour that sixteen-year-old girl whose dreams lie frozen in time.

Can Bess face her past, finally come clean to Mario, and claim the love she has longed to fully experience all these years?

JENA’S REVIEW

Waiting to BeginWaiting to Begin by Amanda Prowse
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Amanda Prowse is an international bestselling author of twenty-seven novels published in dozens of languages. And each one of these books is a gem for readers who love to curl up with a story that promises laughter, tears, love and understanding.

“Waiting to Begin” has a clever format, that could be a gimmick, but instead works wonderfully to create a compelling story. We meet Bess on her 16th birthday. A day that her sweet family celebrates in their usual folksy way. Sixteen is always a special birthday, but today is also the day that Beth will receive her O Level exam results. This means she will be able to move forward with her dream of becoming an air hostess. And she has a special boyfriend, and she anticipates celebrating with him. But, by midnight of her birthday, her entire world has crashed down.

We also see Bess on her 53rd birthday. And the story alternates between these two timelines. While still celebrated in the usual way with her parents and family, this 53rd birthday marks another 24 hours for Bess of a life upended. For too many years she has been mired in shame. Will this birthday also end in devastation? Is it too late for Bess to begin?

I was quite moved with this story, even though I did not like Bess and could not really relate to her. And this shows what a gifted writer Ms. Prowse is- because I did believe in the story itself and the power of love and light to win. I couldn’t stop reading this book and Bess’s story has continued to occupy my thoughts. Highly recommend.

Rabbitsby Terry MilesA deadly underground game might just be altering reality itself in this all-new adventure set in the world of the hit Rabbits podcast.

“Imagine the world’s greatest gamers invented their own wild, lunatic conspiracy theory . . . only to discover it might be ancient, possibly true enough to kill them, and dangerous enough to rewrite the code of the world. That’s Rabbits: brilliant, breathless, and full of madness. Terry Miles makes you feel like you’re the one playing the game . . . and facing the consequences if you lose!”—Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of Ararat and Red Hands

I am in to technology and podcasts, so the idea of reading a book based on a podcast intrigued me. Thanks to  NetGalley and Random House Publishing Company-Ballantine for an advance review copy. What a book!

JENA’S REVIEW

RabbitsRabbits by Terry Miles
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I will be sharing my review on June 8, 2021 at https://www.jenabooks.com/category/pr…

“Win the game, save the world.” “Rabbits” is a conspiracy technothriller that throws the reader into the universe of underground computer gaming and culture. This game isn’t “Call of Duty” or “World of Warcraft”. Rabbits the game is an alternate reality game that is played in the real world.

“Rabbits” the book is a spin-off of the hit “Rabbits” podcast, both of which were created by Terry Miles. The podcast docudrama, rabbitspodcast.com, examines a mysterious and perhaps nefarious ancient game that may hold the key to unlocking the secrets of the universe. The book “Rabbits” covers a similar twisty, thriller tale, with different characters.

Have you ever noticed that frequently you happen to glance at the digital clock on your microwave- in my case it always reads 12:34 pm? Coincidence? That’s what happens to the main character named K. He and his intense gamer friends have heard of a mysterious game that reappeared in 1959. There are no CDs or app of the game known as “Rabbit” and there are no rules. Instead, players must find their own clues and connections, like a time on a clock, a movie that has vanished, or a symbol that reappears.

K. learns that there is a serious problem with the game that could affect the universe. He and his friends, there are many characters in this book, dedicate themselves to solving the game’s puzzle. Many sinister forces are against them, and this is a complex and highly engaging story. The reality in one chapter, could be totally changed in the following chapter. Fortunately, the author writes clearly and deftly and has created memorable and unique characters, which helps the reader navigate the complex worlds of this book.

“The door is open.” Are you ready for the wild ride that is “Rabbits”? I received an advance review copy from NetGalley and Random House Publishing Company-Ballantine. Thanks for the review copy. This is my honest review.

The Ride of Her Lifeby Elizabeth Letts

“This engaging folk-hero biography, which follows Wilkins throughout her grand adventure, also touches on the cultural history of mid-twentieth-century America. As Letts delves into the postwar prosperity that transformed the U.S. into a land of cars and endless highways, she celebrates the dying tradition of the “American tramp or hobo” that Wilkins, the self-christened “last of the saddle tramps,” represented. . . . A heartwarming and nostalgic book to appeal to horse lovers and fans of the author’s previous books.”Kirkus Reviews

Meet Annie Wilkins, her horses Tarzan and Rex, and her lively doggie Depeche Toi (“Hurry Up) as they band together to fulfill Annie’s big dream. “The Ride of her Life” will inspire and comfort you and leave you with the desire to turn your heart west to California.

The year is 1954, when Annie of Mincot, Maine decides that she has worked her entire life, her health is failing, and she is ready to fulfill her big dream of seeing the Pacific Ocean. After growing her last cucumber crop on her struggling stony-ground farm, she puts her plan in motion. You or I might buy a car or a train or bus ticket. Annie buys a horse. In the late fall she loads up some blankets and canned goods and she and Tarzan and her doggie head south on a country road.

The story shines with the sunshine of her epic quest. Annie captures the hearts of everyone she meets-and she meets people every day. People who smile and wave, who read about her in their local newspaper, who offer her food, lodging and a stall for her horse. Snow, mountains, and highways with trucks don’t deter her and she willingly participates in the community parades and luncheons.

1954 was a year that divided the quiet, country small-town past of America from the emerging land of cities and suburbs, factories and businesses, and 4 lane modern highways. Annie connected people with their past, to the “good old days” of the “real” Mayberry America. Before television and car travel changed the heart and soul of America.

This book is fascinating from the viewpoint of getting to know Annie, and also getting to know the America of the past. If you love horses, and personal quests, you will want to read and reread this endearing book.

#NewRelease #The AudacityOfSaraGrayson

The Audacity of Sara Graysonby Joani ElliottWhat happens when the world’s greatest literary icon dies before she finishes the final book in her best-selling series? And what happens when she leaves that book in the hands of her unstable, neurotic daughter, who swears she’s not a real writer? Thanks to Meryl Moss Media, and Post Hill Press for an advance review copy.

“You know what it’s like when you discover a new writer whose witty and wise voice makes your heart sing? That’s Joani Elliott for me. …I stayed up too late turning pages. I loved it.” — Ann Garvin, USA Today bestselling author of I Like You Just Fine When You’re Not Around

I fell in love with this book when I first saw the cover! And when I read the book blurb I opened the book as fast as I could and never put it down until I finished, except when I was laughing so hard I had to catch my breath.

Fabulous book!

JENA’S REVIEW

The Audacity of Sara Grayson: A NovelThe Audacity of Sara Grayson: A Novel by Joani Elliott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Looking for a book that will keep you in your beach lounge chair until the sun goes down? Well, put on plenty of sunscreen and grab “The Audacity of Sara Grayson”. You’ll love this book- each and every paragraph sparkles.

The book has an audacious premise. Cassandra Bonds is a mega-successful author. (Think Jackie Collins or Danielle Steel). She has written many bestsellers and her latest “Ellery Dawson” series is universally acclaimed. But author Bonds dies of cancer before she writes the fifth and final book in the series, a book that the whole world is holding its breath for. Of course, her publisher will now have to choose a new author to write the final book. Except- Cassandra had a different author in mind- her daughter. Her “dying wish” is that her daughter Sara write Book 5.

We first meet befuddled 32 year old Sara at the movie premiere of “Ellery Dawson”. Sara’s gown was supposed to be emerald green but the dress shop goofed and sent her a gray dress. And that fits Sara’s image of herself. She is gray, lost, confused. Fortunately, she has a lovely family, and they see more than a vague, puzzled girl in gray. Sara’s Mum the author is kind, wise and caring. She taught her girls to make a “comfort drawer.” Sara’s older sister Anna-Kath is focused, organized and fondly protective of Sara. Their British Dad died when they were young, and they all remember his loving, creative presence. Each character in this book is so real.

Sara spends much of the story trying not to write the book. Her thoughts are quirky and humorous as she deals with the publishing world and her mother’s death. She also discovers some mysteries about her sweet family. “Audacity” means to be willing to take bold risks. As her words come to her, she learns that she doesn’t have to be bold. She just has to know herself and believe in herself.

This is the debut novel for author Joani Elliott. And this book is a success that Cassandra Bond would have envied. This story is a deft mix of the craft and business of writing, with a gently humorous romance for Sara, and a few mysteries. Each chapter begins with a writing-related quote, which delighted me, too.

Many thanks to Meryl MossMedia and Post Hill Press for an advance digital review copy. This is my honest review.

#NewRelease #WomensFiction #TheInvisiblehusbandofFrickIsland

The Invisible Husband of Frick Islandby Colleen Oakley

“Frick Island is the kind of place where you’d happily be stranded forever like Gilligan. This luminous quirky beauty deserves permanent space on your heart’s bookshelf.” —Kristy Barrett, founder of A Novel Bee

USA Today bestselling author Colleen Oakley delivers an unforgettable love story about an eccentric community, a grieving widow, and an outsider who slowly learns that sometimes faith is more important than the facts. Thanks to Berkley Publishing Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this charming book.

JENA’S REVIEW

The Invisible Husband of Frick IslandThe Invisible Husband of Frick Island by Colleen Oakley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At first glance, the blurb and cover of “The Invisible Husband of Frick Island” sounded to me to like a light-hearted, even funny read. Turns out there are bits of quirkiness, but overall it is a tender and thoughtful story.

Frick Island in the middle of Chesapeake Bay is the creation of author Colleen Oakley, based on a somewhat similar island that really does exist in the Bay. When young novice report Anders Caldwell arrives at the island on a summer weekend to cover the annual Frick Island cake sale, he will learn more than just the facts about a dessert. He will see and feel for himself that no man is an island.

The setting of Frick Island is drawn in loving and specific detail. The caw of the seagulls, the worn out houses and shops like so many “Velveteen Rabbits”, the weathered waterman working on their trawlers at the small marina, and the changeable sea and sky set the scene perfectly. The many townsfolk are also well-presented, with their peculiar ways of seeing the world.

Anders expects to spend one dull afternoon on Frick Island, but he ends returning again and again. He is compelled to solve the mystery of pretty, young Piper Parrish and her apparent delusion. He begins to podcast about the conditions on Frick Island from the effects of global warming to the odd behavior of Piper and the townsfolk. Treated at first as a “ Come Here”, his awkward, careful manner begins to thaw the “From Here’s.”

Can Ander’s podcast help the people of Frick Island, or at least do something for Piper? Can Anders become more comfortable in his own skin? You will enjoy this sincere and charming story and you will see that life is more than the facts of “who”, “what,”where”, and “when”. Anders shows us that while it is hard to explain the “why”, love and hope can sometimes be enough when life ebbs and flows. When we push pass the things that divide us, we can move forward together.

Many thanks to NetGalley for the advance review copy. And much gratitude to Berkley Publishing Group for recommending “Frick Island” to me- I truly loved this book and I highly recommend it.
