When searching for a ray of light…

Dear myself, I know you search for a ray of light when the darkness rises…

You search for the good in tough times…

I know you look for one good thing to hold on to…

please know dearest that the light and the goodness u seek is all within you.

You are the sun who scares away the darkness.

You are the moon that shines bright in the dark night.

You are the goodness you seek.

Thanks for everything you do.

Just keep going. Remember how strong you are.

When the darkness spreads, hold on to yourself, hold on to the eternal light in you, keep believing in the good in you. I won’t let you down! I promise to always keep shining for you. Brighter and stronger! Love you to the Universe and back!

Yours only, Hemdiva

The white cake that no one bought…

Once upon a time, there was a chocolate cake, made of chocolate but was white in color because it was covered in white fondant. It was a special one. The maker placed it in the center of a tray with chocolate cakes that were all made from dark chocolate and hence brown in color. The cakes were put on display. Every visitor that came and saw the white chocolate cake, commented, “Hey, that’s a vanilla cake!”
They bought the regular dark chocolate cakes while the white one just received their surprised looks.
As the brown cakes started getting sold, one of them whispered to the white, “No one wants to buy you because you’re a boring vanilla cake!”
The white cake was sad and wondered what was wrong with being a white chocolate cake? Because it knew that deep down it was a chocolate cake.
After the last brown cake was sold out, the white cake was confident that it would see the garbage bin.
Just then a couple arrived, they looked at all the cakes on the display and stopped at the white one. After enquiring about the flavor and the price, they bought it for their wedding! That was when the white cake realized that it was a wedding cake and not everyone would buy it. The couple needed something special and different and something that would be surprising as well as delicious! The white cake was perfect for them.

When something is unique about you, others often see it as different, abnormal, or unacceptable. When these people are great in numbers or play an important role in your life, you believe their perception of you to be true. Though, it isn’t.

Believe in yourself. Yes, you are different. Yes, you are special.

My illustrated eBook, “Ugly Lilac”, gives a similar message that being different is not a flaw nor a drawback. That you’re special in your own way. Do read it on Amazon for FREE(kindle unlimited) and please leave a review – https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PJBW495

“The park is haunted!”, Kunal whispered to us.

“What?” Krish asked him in a low voice. I was also curious.

Our class teacher, Miss Lyla was busy solving sums on the blackboard and thankfully she hadn’t heard us.

“Kids are vanishing from the Good River Park. And it is believed that the park is haunted…”, Kunal paused as the teacher turned to the class.

He continued after the class, during lunchtime, “They say if you visit the park after eight, you won’t come back”

“Funny story!”, Krish remarked, “I heard it’s closed because it’s being renovated”.

I nodded because dad had informed me about the news, a few days ago.

“No Krish, it’s not! My cousin, Arjun, he disappeared from the park yesterday!”, Kunal said with a sad face.

“What?!”, I exclaimed with fear.

“Yes Kaira, he went to the park after hearing it’s haunted. He wanted to prove he isn’t scared and now, he’s nowhere to be found!”

“I don’t believe it!”, Krish munched on the homemade Thepla, “Coz my dad told me that it will soon be opened… once the work is done…”

Kunal insisted, “Krish, my cousin never believed in the haunted stories! And now we can’t find him anywhere in the park. When we went to file a complaint about Arjun’s disappearance, the inspector informed us that many kids have gone missing since the past few months. None of the kids ever returned and nor was the abductor caught!”, Kunal’s round eyes popped out of his face, “Don’t you believe in supernatural things?”

Krish shook his head as his mouth was full of food.

“You?”, Kunal asked me.

I shrugged, “I read in books that negative energies exist and they can harm you… but then… I never saw any, myself…”, I loved to read a lot and read everything that came in front of my eyes.

And while I told myself that such things don’t exist, I still got anxious when I read about monsters coming after kids.

Kunal gulped, as if what I just said added to his fear, “Krish, I think our parents lied to us, only to keep us out of the trouble. Or maybe the officials are giving out fake news to cover up the truth!”

“I have a plan!”, Krish looked at me and Kunal, “Let’s go to the Good River Park today at 8 and find out!”

I thought he was joking while Kunal’s jaw dropped out of horror.

“Noooo!”, Kunal cried.

“Why?”, Krish questioned as if he didn’t see the panic on our faces. Maybe he did but he always encouraged us to overcome our fears.

“Okay”, Kunal said softly, “I hope I could find my cousin…”

“Great!”, I stood up, “Krish Tilak and Kunal Khane, you two can go if you wish… I won’t be coming…”

Kunal and Krish looked at me and then looked at each other.

“I thought girls are brave!”, Krish taunted.

“Yes, they are!”, I snapped.

“Then?”

“But I don’t think it’s right guys… I mean it could be dangerous”, I was worried.

“I’ll take care of that. Trust me”, Krish said, “Meet at my house at 7:45?”

I and Kunal nodded. But I wish I had not agreed… because then my life changed forever.

I’m Kaira Bhide, and Kunal and Krish are my best friends. All three of us are just 12-year-olds but, we are the smartest in our school or we thought so…

2

“Mom, I gotta go! I, Krish, and Kunal have an important project… school project… science project… to complete”, I’d practiced the lines many times in my room but I was still smiling like a crack! I got anxious whenever I’d to lie!

“Be back soon for dinner, I’m preparing your favorite pizza!”, mom called from the kitchen.

I licked my lips thinking about the pizza and stepped outside, Krish lived just two blocks away from my house. He lived in a bungalow unlike me, I stayed in a four-storeyed apartment. Kunal lived next to him in a tall residential tower, on the 10th floor.

The street was crowded as usual. People were all over the place. The shops were buzzing. I was wearing a yellow jumpsuit and my long black hair was tied in a braid.

When I reached Krish’s place, Kunal was already waiting outside the bungalow. His round belly poked through his red tee, which contrasted his blue jeans. He ate wafers from a super-sized packet, that’s why he had always been the chubby kid. Not because he ate so much but because he never shared!

“Where’s Krish?”, I asked him.

“As usual, he’s late! Krish…!”, he shouted.

A few seconds later, Krish joined us, he had a bag-pack to his back. He was a bit taller than me while Kunal was taller than him. If we stood in a line, we’d resemble a mountain slope.

“Ready?”, Krish asked, he was dressed in a black shirt over black trousers.

The Good River Park was ten minutes away and as we neared the park, I felt something was not right. This part of the city was so silent and uninhabited.

By the time we reached the park, Kunal had finished his wafers. He licked his fingers before wiping his oily hand to his jeans. Yuck!

The letters ‘Good River Park’ shone on the iron gate, as the moon light fell on them. Krish went ahead and pushed the gate open.

It was very dark inside as if it was a cave. The grass had grown up to our knees like no one took care of it.

I’d never been to this park before, only heard that it existed. When I learned that it would be renewed, I had hoped to visit it one day. But not tonight!

Krish opened his bag and took out three torches, he gave us one each.

“I thought you got something to eat in that”, Kunal frowned.

Krish walked through the grass, turning on his torch. I and Kunal followed.

In the torchlight, we saw tall wild grass below and endless darkness around.

“Is this really a park?”, I murmured.

That’s when I saw them… two sparkling eyes coming towards me and I jumped with fear.

Kunal was so frightened, he dropped his torch and shouted.

Krish focused his torch on the eyes and they were indeed coming closer.

“No…!”

But as it came closer, it turned out to be a black cat! Krish laughed and teased us, “Here comes the Kitty monster, meow… meow…!”

“Ha… ha…”, I said angrily.

Kunal got his torch back and we started walking again. My heart was still thumping.

We had no idea where we were going. This park had a small pond somewhere on the inside, which used to be a river many decades ago, and I was scared we might fall into it due to the darkness. And yes, I’m scared of water very much. As a little girl, I always stayed away from the ocean, sea, and any large body of water. While my friends had a pool party, I preferred reading a book or two. Not sure why, but I have got this intense fear of water. Maybe it’s the waves or the shadowy depths or the millions of unknown life forms that lurk underneath that trigger my fear.

Five minutes passed by; Kunal called out his cousin from time to time. But he didn’t get a reply and his voice echoed.

“This way, we won’t find anything!”, Krish thought.

“Then?”, I asked.

“Let’s split up!”, he told us.

I was shaking by his words, what if I get lost in the darkness? What if there was some wild animal hiding who would spring at me? Or worse, I’d drown in that pond! But I said nothing, I wanted him to believe that I was brave.

Kunal went to the right, Krish to the left and I walked straight. The grass crushing under my shoes made a weird sound. Sweat formed on my forehead as I realized I couldn’t see or hear my friends anymore. I couldn’t even spot their torch lights. What if one of them never returns? How big was the park? What kind of animals/creatures did it hide?

3

I kept walking, swallowing my fear with every step. This place was becoming cooler and deadly silent. Probably, there were no animals not even insects. Good, I thought.

Just then, I heard something. A quick sound. I stopped and listened. It was like something moved through liquid…  very quickly. Splashing! Someone was swimming nearby!

But, I thought, there’s only a pond and I guess it’s too small to swim. I heard the sound again. I didn’t move. Suddenly, I heard a scream from the right side that scared the wits out of me!

“Leave me!!”, Kunal was shouting at the top of his voice.

I saw Krish running towards Kunal. I was too terrified to move. Wait, how did I see Krish? My torch was directed towards the ground, so how did I see him?

It took me a moment to realize that the lights were turned on! The park was illuminated and I could see everything. I ran behind Krish.

Kunal was sitting on the grass, pointing to his leg and crying, “Leave me!”

“What happened?”, Krish asked him.

“Save me, guys! He got hold of me!!”, Kunal had closed his eyes out of fear.

“Who?”

“The monster of the park!!”, Kunal screamed.

Krish and I burst into laughter.

“I think you should have a look at the monster, yourself”, Krish chuckled.

Kunal slowly opened his eyes and glanced at his leg; it was tangled in a vine!

He sighed, “I thought it was a …”, he freed himself from its clutches.

Krish helped him get up and we wondered who switched on the lights of the park. Kunal pointed to the switch box, he admitted that he accidentally pulled the lever when he fell. That helped, the darkness was no more.

I told them that I heard someone near that pond and we went there. The pond looked like a black circle; the dark black water had a greenish shade to it. Kunal sat on a wooden bench, that was nearby the pond. I stared at the pond and shuddered.

“Relax Kaira, it’s a pond! I don’t think there are even any fishes in it”, Krish told me.

I nodded.

“I’m tired!”, cried Kunal and took out a chocolate bar from his pocket.

“Yup! The fight with the vine monster must have been tedious!”, Krish joked. Kunal rolled his eyes.

We both sat next to him on the bench. Krish tried to take away the bar and they both wrestled. They did that every now and then. I looked at the pond again, it was very creepy. The water was still and I couldn’t see what was deep inside it.

Suddenly, I gasped as I saw a pale face, underwater. It had two green eyes, a straight nose, and red lips. Then, another moment there was no one! I stood up and went closer to have a look.

The water was blank again, no face, nothing! Then I got pushed, right in the water as Krish and Kunal fought over the bar and dashed against me! This was the worst nightmare of my life!

A scream escaped my throat, “Aaaahhh!”

The three of us fell into the pond and its murky water entered our nostrils and mouth! It tasted filthy and my tongue shuddered.

I was choking, trying hard to rise to the surface but the water was pulling me down to its darkness. The water was so cold, I thought I’d turn to ice in seconds. My hands wrestled the water and searched for something to hold on to. But I was sinking, sinking to the creepy depths of the pond.

Then, I felt someone or something…
