Overview: Impromptu dreams about a passionate but forbidden affair between a priest and a warrior from ancient China lead a pair of strangers into fulfilling a promise made long, long ago.

With a plotline based heavily on ancient Chinese folklore and mysticism, Shanti pens a memorable tale about two modern-day strangers, Sam and Jon, who are seemingly reincarnated and brought together by Fate in order to fulfill a culturally taboo romance that was interrupted long, long ago. Despite the fact that each has just broken up with their respective lover, and has vowed to remain single for a while, Sam and Jon feel an instant, undeniable attraction the moment they meet. They soon discover that they have been simultaneously sharing the same dreams about a forbidden relationship between a priest and a warrior which leads them to question their own quickly burgeoning romance.

Although Sam and Jon have adequate backstories, it is the two ancient lovers, Ling Sa and Li Gan, that Shanti focuses on for this intriguing transcendental tale—And perhaps, rightly so. The priest and the warrior, representing light and darkness in the forms of a white dragon and a black dragon, are the yin and yang for each other, and the foil for Sam and Jon’s ravishing and impulsive romantic relationship. It is through these two ancient characters, brought to light by their dreams, that Sam and Jon begin to question their own gender identities, sexual preferences, and romantic motives, as well as the foundation of their past, present, and future relationships. As Shanti delves into the personal conflicts and inner turmoil suffered by each character as a result of societal pressures to conform to a certain standard, the author provides a compelling and insightful examination of the inner struggles that many LGBTQA individuals encounter in being forced to hide not only their true sexual identities but the very essence of who they are and whom they choose to love.

In “Promise of the Opal”, Author Lyra Shanti presents a profound ancient metaphysical romance, steeped in Chinese mysticism and folklore. This winding tale is an intimate and touching revelation about a forbidden relationship, once shared by two men brought together by the ravages of war, that transcends the centuries into modern times. Shanti writes a compelling and eye-opening tale that ultimately brings to light the angst and frustration suffered by those dealing with issues concerning sexuality, gender bias and dysphoria. Fans of LGBTQ fantasy, bisexual romance, godpunk, and metaphysical fiction will enjoy this romantic, revealing, and sexually charged story.

Skillfully written and masterfully executed, Author Rachel Dunn’s “Venomous: Book 2 of the Dusk Eternal” is a bone-chilling journey into an ancient Egyptian myth and legend that, oddly enough, introduces a well-balanced degree of dark humor and farce into a fascinating and creative historical fantasy plotline. Dunn’s two main characters, Ashira—the former peasant girl made powerful and infamous by the long-dead pharaoh who once possessed her, and Mwarthes—the semi-retired assassin intent on protecting his estranged family while keeping a ravenous monster in a jar, couldn’t possibly fit together more perfectly as they assume their respective roles as protector and deceiver. Readers will delight in the many ways they employ to outwit and survive those who seek to destroy them through common and uncommon causes.

As in Book 1, both main characters continue to depend on each other’s magical abilities to stay alive. But, it is the bumbling and inept Mwarthes who robs the spotlight, constantly testing and reinforcing Ashira’s talents, not to mention her patience, across the many miles that separate them as he riotously stumbles from one deadly encounter to the next. Enhancing the terrifying nature and jocularity of Mwarthes’ many misadventures is Hapi, Dunn’s one-of-a-kind monster in a jar, who is hungry to perform an assassination no matter what the time of day—As long as the reward is a satisfying and delicious morsel.

Generously peppered with unique situations, characters, and dark humor, Dunn’s book is appropriate for older teens and adults. I recommend reading this macabre tale not as a standalone read, but in sequential order due to its intricate plotline and diverse characters. “Venomous: Book 2 of the Dusk Eternal” is an ancient monster tale, tailor-made for fans of historical fantasy and occult fiction.

Author Stephens has created in Reecah the consummate female heroine. Taken to task at a very young age as a pauper, who is further reduced to nothing by the death of her father, this strong female role model begins her life as an unskilled but keen-witted and curiously insatiable adolescent who takes it upon herself to meet a grave challenge which she knows nearly nothing about. Charged with the sole responsibility for saving all of dragonkind, but knowing nothing about her hidden heritage, Reecah takes it upon herself to learn all she can about her ancestral line, the Windwalkers—the highly-esteemed protectors of the dragons. Through sheer determination, perseverance, and a good deal of help from friends she’s made along the way, Reecah does what she must to succeed in accomplishing her goal, dutifully learning to become a respected warrior and a high wizard before restoring her family’s legacy.

Taking into account a reader’s best possible enjoyment, I recommend that this final chapter of the Legends of the Lurker Trilogy, “Reecah’s Legacy”, be read in sequential order as the author intended and not as a stand-alone read. Throughout the first two chapters of Stephens’ Legends of the Lurker Trilogy, Reecah’s military, leadership, and magical skills progress in an exponential manner until the wizened young woman and warrior that she has become reaches this critical chapter in the series. This entire series is beautifully written and conceived with descriptive passages that tempt all five of the senses and stir the imagination. I can say with great certainty that Richard H. Stephens’ Legends of the Luker Trilogy ranks among my Top 10 all-time favorite fantasy series’. I strongly recommend “Reecah’s Legacy” to any reader who loves Epic Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery novels, strong female leads, and magical creatures—Especially dragons!

Overview: At age twenty-seven, Frank Berglund is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). His only chance at finding hope lies in the hands of a caring doctor, a beautiful and cheeky physician’s assistant, and a physical therapist with a warped sense of humor. But, will it be possible for anyone to break through the walls Frank has built within himself, and can he learn to find joy in serving once again?

Living with a debilitating physical challenge like Multiple Sclerosis is difficult at best, if not nearly impossible without a certain degree of help from family, friends, and medical professionals. I know because I, too, suffer from a similar condition. In “If We’re Breathing, We’re Serving”, Author Ferrell Hornsby, whose own husband suffers from MS, paints an intimate and candid portrait of a vital young man dealing with the consequences of this devastating disease, from the onset of symptoms to the acceptance of his diagnosis, and finally, on his decision to live his best life through helping others cope with such life-altering disabilities.

As Author Hornsby’s main character, Frank, learns to face new challenges through encouragement, humor, and sheer determination, he comes to appreciate the fact that, although he must rely on others to get through the even the simplest of days, he too can be of great benefit to others coping with such challenging circumstances. Through Frank, and other characters featured in this highly intuitive story, readers will find effective explanations as to an individual’s most-likely reaction and mindset after receiving a dire prognosis like Multiple Sclerosis.

MS is a painful and progressive auto-immune disease in which the body attacks itself, eating away at the protective myelin sheath surrounding each nerve, causing scar tissue called “sclerosis” to form. The result is chronic nerve damage that disrupts communication between the brain and the body, leading to muscle weakness and/or paralysis, vision problems, and other relatively benign to severely disabling conditions.

Hornsby’s characters are true-to-life figures who, in reality, could very well be one’s own family members, friends, or coworkers. The author’s writing sweeps the reader along on a soulful journey that finds these characters sinking into the pits of despair, battling severe depression, formidable physical challenges, and unbearable pain, only to find redemption by looking to others for help and meeting those challenges head-on. Along the way, Frank meets amazing and inspiring individuals who have learned to deal with the hard knocks blows that life has dealt them, as well as the brave and blessed caregivers who dedicate their lives to servicing those unable—and sometimes unwilling—to provide for their own care.

I strongly recommend this contemporary fiction novel to anyone suffering from chronic pain or a debilitating illness like MS, along with their caregivers, family, and friends. This motivational and inspirational tale provides key instances that explain not only the physicality of this devastating disease, but its impact on the psyche of the affected individual, lending a necessary sense of understanding, support, and empathy to those loved ones and strangers involved in their care.

With a fast moving plotline that places a secretive couple, who can’t stand to be apart, in the midst of a group of newlyweds eager to get their respective mates between the sheets, Author Bradley hits just the right mix between keeping her frisky characters in line and all out mayhem. A great sense of humor and just the right dose of self-restraint makes leading man and town sheriff, Ben, the perfect foil for his shy and restrained love interest, kindergarten teacher (and best-friend to Jessie and Piper—the two leading ladies of Bradley’s prior chapters in this series), Kelly.

Aside from the a copious amount of hot romance and lots of action between the sheets, “More Than A Fantasy” delivers a series of stories within a story as a woman and her young daughter try to escape the abusive husband who won’t let them go; a former love interest of Kelly’s tries anything to please her and get her back; drag racers pose a significant danger to the entire town; and of course, Ben’s friend and fellow cop, Indigo, starts looking for a love of his own. Through it all, Author Bradley employs plenty of romantic thrills and chills, mystery, suspense, and tons of tongue-in-cheek humor to keep readers riveted to this hilarious and sizzling romantic tale. Fans who love stories about small town romance, close-knit communities, cops in love, romantic comedies, and damsels who are not-so-much in distress will find this absorbing read checks all the right boxes.

This novel does contain strong language, graphic sexual situations, and violence. Survivors of domestic abuse may be triggered by certain scenes in this story.

Overview: A ragtag group of adolescents backed by the Archangel Michael is humanity’s only hope for survival as they battle demons and creatures sent by the Four Horsemen while traveling across North America to defeat the Anti-Christ and stop Lucifer's evil plan to become God.

“Lucifer’s Revelations” is a good vs. evil saga that leads its characters into an epic story of love, jealousy, revenge, and redemption. When Lucifer runs amok against the Heavenly order, killing God and placing humanity in the midst of his lust for power, the Archangel Michael is charged by his Heavenly Father with saving both heaven and earth in this sharp apocalyptic tale by Author E. C. Fisher. As the author picks and chooses featured events from the Bible’s own end of times saga—Revelations—this unique interpretation about how the final war between good and evil will be waged is guaranteed to intrigue fans of occult horror and apocalyptic fiction.

Fisher’s plotline is quite memorable and his characters have a unique depth of personality. In a typical fall-out shelter, set up as an Ark to host survivors of the Four Horsemen’s plagues, the author portrays a standard military/civilian-style set-up, with a Colonel and Madam Mayor overseeing operations and tending to survivors’ needs. These bedraggled refugees seem to accept their lot with few grievances and even less willingness to get out into the world and fight for their freedom—A daunting task considering they are up against supreme evil in the form of Lucifer himself. The exception to this rule is represented by a group of adolescents, seeking excitement and adventure, who flock to the charismatic and enigmatic Archangel Michael.

E.C. Fisher’s admirable wit and humor generously peppers this otherwise grave tale, creating a well-balanced, intriguing, and action-packed read despite the heaviness of the subject matter. Although the author’s story essentially focuses on the one-on-one battle between Michael and Lucifer for the dominion of All, it is his rag-tag group of teenagers that the Archangel regretfully recruits to help him battle Lucifer’s minions who lend humor, credence, and sparkle to this Armageddon tale. Michael’s team, made up of starry-eyed adolescents and teens, provides a host of fun and sometimes shocking reveals as their leader deals with his newfound paternal role as benefactor and protector to the human race.

“Lucifer’s Revelations” is imaginative and unique. Fisher’s creative genius turns the familiar biblical version of the End Times completely upside-down when he bends the original storyline to its breaking point. He shocks traditional belief by identifying Lucifer as the original author of New Testament, the heartless murderer of God, and—most shocking of all—the true originator and leader behind the Christian faith. However, it is in the innocent hearts and minds of those who hope to own the future that the true revelation comes to light in “Lucifer’s Revelations”—That perhaps the good will inherit the Earth after all, and Heaven will come to those willing to sacrifice their own souls for the benefit humankind.

I highly recommend this read for fans of apocalyptic fiction, dark fiction, and occult horror.

Author P.J. Mann successfully weaves together a newly burgeoning gay romance, a mission to find a mysterious African tribe believed to be lost to time, and the highly anticipated rescue of a long-lost jungle explorer in her tense Paranormal Suspense novel, “Thou Shalt Never Tell”.

Within this complex plotline, is the story of two men at odds with themselves; introverted anthropologist Kaine Martin, who is a gifted but undiscovered psychic medium plagued by self-doubt, and Jason Murdock, a lost explorer and drunkard, cursed to serve the dark and ruthless priestess whom he loves, Akuna-Ra. Joined by their ardor and interest in anthropological discovery, these two men find themselves wrapped up in a dangerous and enigmatic struggle between magic and reality as the priestess, Akuna-Ra, unrelentingly demands their allegiance, orders them to unquestionably serve her, and prevents them from leaving Africa to return to civilization. Just as compelling as this African adventure becomes, it is the backstories and romantic relationships that Author Mann creates between her characters—Jason Murdock and Akuna-Ra, and Kaine Martin and his new gay lover, Mark, who he met prior to his leaving for Africa, that eventually becomes the key substance of this dark tale.

Mann’s story appears to have been written in one language and translated into English since the text does not read smoothly and the dialogue is jarring and stilted when read aloud. I would suggest that the author could definitely improve this story through the employment of an English editor. The substance of Mann’s story, however, is quite fascinating, sweeping the reader on a dangerous, suspenseful, and thrilling adventure into the darkest heart of Africa. Readers should be aware that this book contains strong language, adult sexual situations, and violence.

In “A Stag in the Shadows”, Author S.E. Turner draws readers into a complex and highly driven Fantasy epic with compelling characters and colorful settings. Author Turner’s opening plotline reads much like an adult fairytale, with idyllic kingdoms falling prey to a villainous conqueror, kings and their subjects captured and enslaved in the villain’s dark and treacherous mines, and a beautiful young princess being held prisoner in a lonely tower—Forced to remain there until she is of age to marry said villain. However, Turner’s Princess Saskia is neither demure nor helpless as she develops into a strong female lead by tricking the usurper’s right-hand man, Cobin, to secretly groom her as a warrior. But despite the fact that she is a princess, held against her will in a tall tower, Saskia is no Rapunzul. Instead, she is devilishly determined to become an expert assassin—A lethal force to exact vengeance on King Hezekiah’s for his unwarranted treachery against her and her father’s kingdom.

Turner’s plotline is riveting from beginning to end as she guides readers on a pulse-pounding fantasy journey they will not soon forget. Just as in the other books in the Kingdom of Durundal Series, the reader feels as though they are being drawn through this tale... Living an alternate life in order to reach an ultimate purpose that has yet to be defined.

Turner’s unforgettable characters have a depth of personality that reminds one of a person plucked from history rather than a made-up, imaginary individual. Each character has their own well-developed personality and backstory, and each fits perfectly into the overall plotline of this remarkable tale.

I highly recommend “A Stag in the Shadows” to anyone—ages 17 and up—who loves Epic Fantasy, Sword and Sorcery tales, and Adult Fairytales with amazing characters and a strong female lead. I also recommend that one reads “A Stag in the Shadows” in sequence as part of the Kingdom Of Durundal Series for the best enjoyment and understanding of the full story even though this novel may also be relished as a stand-alone read. It is worth noting that this novel does contain graphic violence.

J. Schlenker’s “The Innkeeper on the Edge of Paris” is a wonderful modern romance tale that takes place around a picturesque little cottage inn on the outskirts of the Eternal City. There is much more to this destination romance story than meets the eye when the ghost of a 17th-century French woman, named Dora, suddenly appears to the inn’s newly-checked-in American tourist, Isa. When Isa’s dreams of Dora—the inn’s resident spirit—make way for the actual appearance of the ghost in real life, the unexpected onset of a possible romance with a visiting Scotsman provokes a stunning tale of lost love, a devastating family tragedy, a keep of secret love letters, reincarnation, and destiny.

The juxtaposition of past and present between two young women born centuries apart is well presented and thoughtfully maintained between Author Schlenker’s characters, Isa, and her ghostly doppelgänger, Dora. Schlenker sets up a vivid comparison of the women’s two separate timelines while staying true to the historical and cultural differences between her two main characters. At the same time, the author focuses on the chance similarities and relationships impacting their separate yet similar life progressions, setting up a series of metaphysical ties that inextricably brings the pair together. As Isa’s days progress and her dreams fill her in on the bits and pieces of a life that she will soon realize was once hers, circumstances become fate, and fractions of Isa’s real-life begin to reflect her nightly dreams. She inevitably finds herself and her new paramour swept up in an unavoidable journey that reveals Destiny will always prevail.

J. Schlenker weaves a compelling and complex metaphysical romance novel in “The Innkeeper on the Edge of Paris”. Her compelling descriptions of the scenery, culture, and pace of everyday life in la belle France paint a marvelous portrait of Paris and the surrounding countryside. With backstories about popular French artists, descriptions about the glories of classic French cuisine, travel notes about well-known landmarks and hidden gems, and remarks concerning the history and customs of the past in comparison to modern France, Schlenker presents a vivid, realistic, and immersive novel that will instantly sweep any reader right off their feet.

This charming yet mysterious tale is quite hard to put down, and I highly recommend “The Innkeeper on the Edge of Paris” for any reader who loves destination romances, ghost stories, metaphysical mysteries, and tales of reincarnation.
