Heidi Barr lives near the St. Croix River Valley in Minnesota with her husband and daughter where they tend a large organic vegetable garden, explore nature and do their best to live simply.

As a mother, spouse, gardener, and writer, she is committed to cultivating ways of being that are life-giving and sustainable for people, communities and the planet. She loves putting words together to paint pictures of ideas, as well as walking with others as they explore what it means to live well on a finite planet. Hiking through forests and across prairies, wading in streams, digging in the soil and surrounding herself with natural wonder help her stay grounded in reality.

Heidi Barr is currently not accepting new questions.

This winter, it has been tempting to bemoan the lack of snow and stay inside, longing for spring. And that’s no way to spend one’s time. S

“Once, in another lifetime, there was an ocean here, and if you plant your feet in the soil you can almost feel the ancients rising and falling like the tides of old as the storm gathers strength.”
Heidi Barr, Woodland Manitou: To Be on Earth

“A walk through the woods probably won’t change what’s wrong, but it can change how we respond to it.”
Heidi Barr, 12 Tiny Things: Simple Ways to Live a More Intentional Life

“I want to live in a world where weeds still sometimes get the last word.”
Heidi Barr, Woodland Manitou: To Be on Earth

“As the cold wind blows and the leaves start to fall, I am reminded that there is no renewal without the passing away that punctuates all things in a human life.”
Heidi Barr, Prairie Grown: Stories and Recipes from a South Dakota Hillside

“That’s the thing about living on the earth – we humans can make all sorts of decisions and plans, but at the end of the day, the earth always gets the last word.”
Heidi Barr, Prairie Grown: Stories and Recipes from a South Dakota Hillside

“A visit to the family farm in spring means witnessing growth and challenge and beauty and stillness all rolled into one.”
Heidi Barr, Prairie Grown: Stories and Recipes from a South Dakota Hillside

“So even though Grandpa's life has closed its final chapter, the story that he embodied continues each time we take a handful of dirt to check moisture levels or turn our head at the sound of the wind shifting directions before a storm. It lives on as we give thanks for the abundance that we have, whatever it looks like. It lives on in every decision we make that puts someone else first.”
Heidi Barr, Prairie Grown: Stories and Recipes from a South Dakota Hillside

“Once, in another lifetime, there was an ocean here, and if you plant your feet in the soil you can almost feel the ancients rising and falling like the tides of old as the storm gathers strength.”
