Remembering September 11 as a New Yorker

Remembering September 11

Growing up and living an hour north of New York City, I was always very fond of Manhattan and its unmistakable skyline. The views at night were breathtaking. I can’t tell you how many days I spent with my neck kinked upward taking in the massive Twin Towers as I stood on the sidewalk below.

On that fateful day I stood in horror, just as countless others did, watching the events of the morning of September 11, 2001 unfold. I was in my living room in front of the televi...

Jay Long : My First Published Poetry Book

Ever since I was a child I have had a connection with pad and pen. I can remember as a  toddler, not quite 4 years old, grabbing a black felt pen and a yellow legal pad and mimicking my mother’s cursive writing. Some parents used the TV or toys to distract their children and keep them occupied, mine simply allowed me to scribble.  I guess for that reason alone, it’s no surprise I have always kept notebooks nearby – no matter where I am.  I have them by my bedside, in the living room, car, I t...

My Chinese Fortune Cookie is a Liar!

If yesterday was foreseen in a Chinese fortune cookie, it was completely wrong. I mean, I don’t really hold much value in the paper fortunes anyway but if I did, my faith in them would have been shattered.

“Something wonderful is about to happen to you.”

Just think of the optimism I hit the ground running with the following morning when that was my final thought for the evening. The day started much like any other – up by 8:00am and setting my ‘TODO’ list before grabbing a small breakfast. I...

Can Words Really Inspire?

I’m often told that the words I write or have written in the past are uplifting and on occasion, inspiring. I never really thought twice about it until recently when I saw a quick Facebook quote that read – ‘Don’t follow your dreams – Chase them!”.

I began to think about all the millions of words I’ve read and written. And even those that have been said to me personally and  really tried to pinpoint any that may have changed my life or had a deep impact on the way I live it. I thought about i...

21 Life Lessons I Learned From My Dog

Over the years I have had several pets but my latest dog Finnegan I adopted from the local animal shelter. He was abused and wandered throughout an entire winter alone. Just like children,  most pet’s emotions are true and their actions and reactions are just what they should be. If my dog was human I think he’d be pretty chill. Life is simple. Or at least it should be.  Don’t believe me? Well, here is what I know about life just by owning a dog.

Never bite the hand that feeds you. Trust is...

My Lunch With Robin Williams

This was originally posted on Rebelle Society. This is a fictitious account of my day with Robin Williams. It was inspired by a writing prompt in a writing group I am a part of. It asked us to pick one person in history, living or dead, to spend the day with and write about it. I chose Robin Williams because he was always one of my favorite human beings. I was saddened by his death and will forever remember him on July 21..our birthday.

A Micro Fiction Love Story

You may ask, ‘What is micro-fiction?’ Well to know that we first need to know what Flash-Fiction is. Flash-Fiction is a super short story that typically is told using 1,000 words or less. Micro-Fiction is a spinoff of that. Micro-Fiction typically tells a story using 300 words or less.  if it were a movie, it would consist of the entire plot point, beginning, middle and end, all in the length of the trailer.

Ernest Hemingway is credited with creating the six-word story, ‘For sale: baby shoes,...

I’m Jay Long, Who the Hell Are You?

Hello world! Remember me?

Little by little I have come to realize that as much as I have molded myself into who I am today, I have also allowed my surroundings and situations win out more times than not. If I hit a hurdle, instead of jumping over it, I let it control my next move and those choices have all come with consequences, both good and bad. There were times I blocked my own happiness simply because I didn’t feel I was worth it. But it has taken me all of the last 8 years, after my div...

What Will ‘The Dash’ Hold For You on Your Last Day

We all face the inevitable reality that we are mortal at some point in our lives. When that day will be, I cannot say, none of us have perfected that skill. I know that when the day comes, I will hopefully have time to ponder three very important features that I believe define my life.

One is that I lived without regret. I can say that I have made amends with my past. I know that all the wrong turns have always taken me to the right place. I believe we follow certain paths in life. Some call...
