I am now reading Amy Scholder's book Icon for the Feminist Press read-a-thon, something I've been looking forward to greatly, and Amy's introduction and the first essay totally knocked me out. Amy Scholder's introduction and her whole idea for a book of writers discussing celebrity is really fascinating. also, since i also grew up in the 70s, her reference points are my reference points.

The first essay, Mary Gaitskill writing about Linda Lovelace, was so intense, after I read it, i had to rest. You know how that is when you read something powerful and then you have to put the book down to digest it before continuing? I found it very moving, especially when she writes about her own rape. I have been doing a lot of work on rape these past few years for my latest novel, and so the essay really resonated with me.

Right now I'm feeling that the book is way smarter than my ability to successfully describe it, so, along with recommending Valerie Solanas, I strongly urge you to pick up a copy of this book, too.

i want to let you all know that my new novel, Pissing in a River, has an official release date now: June 24. it is being published by the Feminist Press in New York City.
