The Flowers of Poppies Worn in Splendour
My humble contribution to Remembrance Day
Some gave their life for a kingdom.
Some died without a voice.
Somewhere was a voice in the wilderness,
But it was not a wilderness of choice.
There is no freedom on a battlefield,
And battles are not fought with dreams.
Minefields are full of nightmares.
Nightmares are full of screams.
Weapons are for a purpose,
That purpose can be a crime.
Some crime goes without punishment,
But the punishment was not mine.
Suffering can become a kingdom,
A kingdom lived in the dark.
The dark is full of shadows,
Where blood leaves its mark.
The flowers of poppies worn in splendour
Paying tribute to the dead.
Peace is what they all died for
But that word still needs to be spread.

Meaningless Words
Meaningless Words
When you read the final word that was written
And the last song of the day is sung
Don’t ask where is the freedom
That was fought for by the young.
Look and see where it lays dying
In rotting heaps on any street
As the numbers keep on building
And the dead make plans to meet.
Words spoken by the righteous
Once a year in memory
Will not save the poor from dying
Nor open the door and set them free.
If minds were joined in union
And the word peace was set in stone
Then maybe man could find an answer
And a way forward could be shown.
But if peace was the prize for humanity
And the guns of destruction fired no more
Then another reason would need to be invented
To fight another war!
