When my brother was thirteen (my mirror twin sister and I were eleven), he told my father that he wanted to get a tattoo of Felix the Cat on his chest. My strict, single Chinese father reacted as many might imagine: he went into a diatribe about the danger of sharing needles, about how he could end up with AIDS. But, mostly, I remembered his smirk, that, due to his immigrant identity, he couldn’t

Unwieldy Creatures by Addie Brook Tsai
"The queer Frankenstein retelling I never knew I needed. The whole book was wonderful, but that back half had me absolutely hooked. I intended to take my time with this one and then finished the book in one night."

"I enjoyed this book, even if some of the parallels were a bit too on-the-nose for me. I liked Plum as a character a lot, and as a non-binary lesbian with A LOT of feelings about frankenstein, I felt that there were few other people this book was made" Read more of this review »

“It was starting to become clear to her the true price of monetary comfort. She felt a great sadness in her heart for the agency she would lose in this new life, the freedom to be herself gone. Sure, she had lived as a poor teenager. She and her mother worked themselves to the bone, but at least they could be pure of heart, sincere to themselves.”
Addie Brook Tsai, Unwieldy Creatures

“Sometimes language crowds the mind so much, it's like standing without gravity. Sometimes the ground tells you who you are.”
Addie Brook Tsai, Unwieldy Creatures

“I would never find out what she had to say, if anything. She postponed three or four times before I told her I couldn’t handle how difficult it seemed for her to make this one commitment to me, especially after having made so few in my life. At first, Ma tried to play the victim, but this was a mechanism I already knew from before. I wasn’t interested in carrying that story for her, which is exactly what I told her.”
