#SilverScreenBlack: 'Loving Vincent' (2017)

(95 mins)

Mario's rating: 4.5/5 (starry nights)

'Paints Out': Astonishing to watch and aching to hear, despite van Gogh's death and loneliness, a most beautiful light seeps into every painted scene, and eventually, your soul.

👍 The Sunflowers: The incredible artwork (that took 125 painters six years to achieve); the impeccable acting by the Polish, Irish and British cast; and the immediate absence of snobbery - you will love this film, even if you don't see the point of paintings.

👎 The Crows: The film lost to 'Coco' at the 2018 Academy Awards. Can the UK still be involved as well as this in such trans-European productions under Brexit? And don't expect this film to have an 'alternative history' happy ending - this isn't directed by Tarantino.

📽️ Favourite scene: The start of the end credits, where the actual portraits, photos and destiny of the film's real characters are revealed.

🥇 Best quote: "But in this death nothing is sad. It takes place in broad daylight, with a sun that floods everything with a light of fine gold."

🙁 Best depressing quote: "[Vincent] looked so happy that this dirty crow was coming close. He didn't seem to care that it ran off with his lunch. And, I thought to myself how lonely is this guy that even a thieving crow brightens up his day?"

⏳ Best lockdown quote: "Days seem like weeks to me. Days are weeks."
