“The theory I will present, based on some well-established science as well as some new science and some speculative ideas, states that the universe is neither friendly, hostile, nor indifferent to us. Rather, it is responsive. We live in a cosmos that responds to our actions by bringing us more of the same. To oversimplify for a moment, if we act friendly to the world, we find that circumstances emerge that reinforce our belief that the world is friendly. Similarly, if we act hostile to the world, we find our perspective justified because events arise that confirm our preconceived notions. When we align with circumstances, circumstances align with us. We can call this flow.”

“I view these two concepts, flow and synchronicity, as mutually dependent. In short, when we align with circumstance, circumstance aligns with us. Csikszentmihalyi’s version of flow tells us how to align with circumstance by getting “into the zone,” and Jung’s version of synchronicity tells us how circumstances align with us when we do that. Together these concepts form my definition of flow. Is flow about”

“Faith in science is explainable by pointing to the laws of cause and effect. A cause may be hidden, yet scientists have faith that there is always a cause to be found. Scientific faith is faith in the process of science. Religious faith is also faith in a process, but that process (as best I understand it, and only in some cases) is attributed to an unknowable god.”
