As as is the case with many stories, the idea came from a number of different sources, over a period of time. When watching the news, it struck me that the idea that increasing economic growth is always a good thing, however achieved, is considered a truism. I wondered whether this is necessarily so, as it seemed to me that increasing economic growth often involves makes life more difficult for some people.

I've been interested in the 'sleep' aspect for awhile, as sleep is vital for health and, as described in the book, sleep patterns have been significantly altered since the invention of electricity, and artificial light, and more recent forms of technology have continued to influence how, and how long, people sleep.

I'm also interested in developments about the administration of justice, such as the way that some criminal trials have recently been held partially, or in a few cases, wholly, in secret. These ideas came together over a period of time to form the skeleton of the plot.

Best wishes,

Review- 'The temple of the golden pavilion'.

The Temple of the Golden Pavilion The Temple of the Golden Pavilion by Yukio Mishima

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I liked this novel a little less than Mishima's other major works, as I thought the pacing was too slow at points, although it was often sumptuously beautiful and an interesting character study of a man unable to find a place in the world.

The protagonist, Mizoguchi, becomes an acolyte at a Buddhist temple (of the title) a Read more of this blog post »

A really enjoyed this. Forster writes some great dialogue, perfectly capturing the speech of people who regularly speak nonsense in an authoritative tone. In that way, it captures the confidence of the English middle classes in Edwardian Britain.
