Although the tone of this book is very much of an age when boys did science and girls kept the clerical records, it contains so many big ideas and 'proper' science that it must surely be regarded as a classic of the golden age. Deeply philosophical a ...more

'The recollections of an ageing artist in post-war Japan' does not initially sound like a very engaging premise, but the author pulls it off. This is part of the appeal of Ishiguro's work - he sees profound where most would see mundane. He explores h ...more

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill

A modern ghost story with a classic feel. Susan Hill goes full on M.R.James here, even to the extent of naming a chapter after one of his most well-known stories. And indeed, The Woman in Black begins in a typical Jamesian way, with a polite professi ...more

2.5 stars. This is a nice story, but a bit too nice. It reads like a fairy tale with all the Grimm removed. Klune writes well, and the book is genuinely funny in places, but it is SO preachy that it soon becomes tiring. Yes, it is important to be you ...more

An enjoyable read. The story is well written and definitely subverts your expectations. The premise is a bit unbelievable, but that's OK - this is fiction, after all! The author succeeds in creating tension, particularly in the first half. I had an i ...more

3.5 stars. This is the first Hemingway book I have read and I enjoyed it. The story is short and simple and strangely memorable. I read it without any eye to allegory, just as a straightforward real-life narrative, and that's probably the best way to ...more
