E.G. RADCLIFF IS A PART-TIME pooka and native of the Unseelie Court. She collects acorns, glass beads, and pretty rocks, and the crows outside her house know her as She Who Has Bread.

Her Coming of Áed fantasy series was crafted in the dead of night after offering sacrifices of almonds and red wine to the writing-block deities.

You can reach her by scrying bowl, carrier pigeon, or @egradcliff on social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Amazon Author Page).

I woke up very disoriented and tried to figure out what I should do with the memories of the dream that kept bumping around my head. Strangely, it laid out the places and the main characters; from it, I knew all about the Maze, the White City, Áed and his relationship with Ninian, and a thousand little details about everyone and everything... but the dream had no plot. It was far too tempting a gift to pass up, and so I decided to take what my brain had given me and play with it until I'd created something.(less)

If I get stuck even though I'm excited, then I need to break away. In that case, I do a repetitive workout (like swimming lengths or running laps) that doesn't require much thought, I watch a good movie or read a really good book, and then I stay up foolishly late so that my brain dissolves its way past the block. It's also helpful for me to do research; there's motivation in the details, and rooting out tiny little things that I can add to my story helps get the wheels turning again.

More and more, I've found that when I have writer's block, I switch to drawing. When I'm drawing my characters, I'm contemplating many details about them and the story. It never fails to get me unstuck. (less)

Christmas, Grown Up

I have a strange relationship with Christmas.

That is, I don't think I ever liked it for the right reasons. When I was young and Santa Claus was very real, I cared not for the presents or the Christ child. I cared about Saint Nicolaus, and I cared about what he was.

It was very clear to me that Santa wasn't human. He was, however, sentient and benevolent and capable of impossible deeds. Every Christ

“I can’t tell if she has a flair for the dramatic, or whether we’re all about to die.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Wild Court

“He’d killed a man, but the man had deserved it, and that wasn’t the part that made him shake as he stared at what he’d done.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Hidden King

“To chase a pretty story felt like foolishness when scraping by was hard enough, and the towering cliffs jutting up from the lowland presented another deadly discouragement. People told themselves that their lives were as good as they could ever be.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Hidden King

“Energy roared through his blood in a high, keening song. Morcant’s eyes widened as he stumbled backward with a cry, and for a moment, Áed saw himself reflected in Morcant’s irises.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Hidden King

“Áed had not, in the short time he’d known her, seen her look particularly stubborn or angry, but now she donned acrimony as easily as a favorite dress.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Hidden King

“Ninian stared in shock as the stranger met his gaze, noticing the way the color danced like the glow of embers over a coal. It was darkly brilliant around the edges, licking crimson in toward the center, and around the pupil glimmered a fine circle of bright copper flecks.
It was stunning.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Last Prince

“Máel Máedóc leaned forward, all height and muscle and astute, lightning-sharp eyes. “Áed is dangerous. That’s honest. If he knew himself, he could probably kill you where you stand, and send an awful lot down with you. He can know every feeling you have and every lie you tell.” The shopkeeper’s eyes were bluer than the far-out ocean, and seven times as deadly. “He is not safe to be around.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Last Prince

“Áed,” he whispered, too softly to be heard. Just trying out the words. Just to hear them, maybe convince himself to swallow them again. “Please.” He swallowed; it was hard to say. “Please catch me.”
Áed opened his eyes.
Ninian’s breath choked him.
Áed looked otherworldly in the moonlight, and a slow, tiny smile crept over his face. “Okay.”
E.G. Radcliff, The Last Prince
