New story coming October 2024!

It’s been a while, dear reader, but I am so excited to share that my newest short story will be published by Mysterion Online this October!

One day last fall I was driving to my local library and noticed a weeping willow in our neighborhood. Because I’m me, my first thought was, “I wonder why it is called a weeping willow. Why would a willow be sad?” Then it occurred to me that maybe it wasn’t the willow that was weeping, and a dark but beautiful story began to take shape.

“The Sallowight willow was nothing special to look at from the outside. Just big and old with a thick curtain of branches that made it feel like you were stepping through a leafy waterfall. But in the center around the trunk, it was like a room.”

If you’re a fan of Shirley Jackson or spooky Southern Gothic vibes, “The Willow” is for you! I’ll post the final link when the story goes live on Mysterion, so be watching for that email next month!

My Publisher Is Closing, So Hurry to Get Your Copy of That Pale Host!

I found out last week that my publisher, Monster Ivy, is shutting its doors. This means That Pale Host will no longer be available starting in December. If you want a copy of the book, please snag it before the end of November! I recommend a paper copy over digital.

I’m not sure what this will mean for the book long-term. There are so many things that will need to fall into place. I’d appreciate your prayers as I move forward toward the next thing.

I'm on the Fantastical Truth podcast!

I got the wonderful opportunity to chat with the Lorehaven crew about mental health, deconstruction, church hurt, and how it all relates to my novel, That Pale Host. It was loads of fun, even though we covered heavy topics! Give it a listen on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

I’m so honored to be invited on the Fantastical Truth podcast with E. Stephen Burnett and Zack Russell! It was a ton of fun to talk to them with a microphone recording. We discussed my two favorite topics: theology and fiction! Click below to take a listen!

Fantastical Truth Episode 67:
How Do Fantastic Stories Avoid Preachiness While Still Discipling Readers in Christ?

Christian-made stories should not preach from on high at readers beyond the ‘fourth wall,’ but should help disciple our imaginations in Christ.”

New Article at Lorehaven: Why We Long for Movies to Match Their Books

My new article just went live on Lorehaven! It’s all about the unexpected theological reason why movies rarely live up to books. There are World War Z, Mary Poppins, Shrek, and C.S. Lewis references, so you won’t want to miss it!

From the article “Why We Long for Movies to Match Their Books

It’s tricky business for creators to translate a book to screen. Fans endlessly nitpick film versions of the Harry Potter series, The Hunger Games, The Lord of the Rings, and even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Good screenwriters know how to sacrifice fan-favorite moments to get good visual storytelling.

But sometimes you come across movies that bear no resemblance to their source materials, such as the film versions of Mary Poppins and World War Z
