Colin Alexander is a writer of science fiction and fantasy. Actually, Colin Alexander is the pseudonym for Alton Kremer, maybe his alter ego, or who he would have been if he hadn't been a physician and biochemist and had a career as a medical researcher. His most recent book, The Secret of the Martian Girl, is his eleventh and the fifth of the Leif the Lucky novels. Colin is an active member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, Mystery Writers of America, and the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance. Away from writing fiction, his idea of relaxation is martial arts (taekwondo and minna jiu jitsu). He lives in Maine with his wife. His books are available on Amazon in print and e-book formats. ...more

The best answer to your question is that I do have a sequel planned. The second half of next year is when I am projecting the release. It is a bit too far ahead to be more precise on the date. I can't say right now whether there would be additional ones after that. I will know a lot more about that when the sequel is done.(less)

Hi, and thank you for the questions. They are good ones.

I actually do not find the Fermi paradox so much a paradox as an expression of two other key features of the universe. It has taken life a couple of billion years on Earth to evolve to the point of a technological civilization that could be detected by an outside observer. That level of technology has existed for less than 100 years out of those couple of billion. So, many other civilizations could evolve in the universe, but if their rate of evolution is just slightly different than ours, we will never detect each other. This is also connected to the scale of the universe and the distance over which a civilization could be detected. Right now, we are limited (most likely) to our immediate galactic neighborhood, which (as above) makes it unlikely we will detect someone. The other possibility in my mind I explored in the 4th Leif the Lucky book and had Leif refer to it in the 5th book. That is: intelligence could be an adverse indicator for the survival of a species. I'll stop there so as to avoid a spoiler.

In terms of deterministic or probabalistic, I'll go with probabalistic, at least at a quantum level. I always did like Schrodinger's cat.(less)

The Lucky Starman is now available

Yay!  The Lucky Starman is now available on Amazon.  This is the third adventure of Leif the Lucky.  It has a gorgeous cover from Alejandro Colucci that creates some dissonance with the title.  There's a reason for that.  Leif finds himself stranded in orbit, viewing a destroyed civilization on Earth through the screens of a starship that is running out of food and fuel.  Is Leif really Lucky?  He Read more of this blog post »

“Ranks of rectangular tables filled the space, each topped with plastic that was trying to resemble wood, but didn’t.”
Colin Alexander, Starman's Saga: The Long, Strange Journey of Leif The Lucky

“What came through equally clearly was that if I did something stupid and died and hadn’t been trained, it would be their fault for not having trained me. On the other hand, I could still do something stupid and die after I had been trained. But as long as I’d had the course, it would be my fault.”
Colin Alexander, Starman's Saga: The Long, Strange Journey of Leif The Lucky

“It’s an accumulation. Every day and every thing reminds you that you don’t fit. Starfolk weren’t allowed to be married, or to have kids, but there are so many other obligations that connect a person to their social network and structure. And they haven’t kept up with any of it for twenty-eight years. The profiles from before the starshot and after it are like two different people. These people couldn’t handle it. I’m not sure how many others. It seems to trigger a major depression, even in people selected for personalities that don’t get depressed. I’m calling it Temporal Alienation Syndrome.”
