Welcome! I write novels that seek to transport and enrich readers while entertaining them. I founded my imprint, Starr Creek Press, on the principle of "books, not boxes," and the idea that a good book should transcend its genre and be satisfying to readers of any age. My novels have won awards and contests from Writer's Digest, Publisher's Weekly's BookLife, the Eric Hoffer Book Award and others, but it's hearing from readers that really makes my day. So, if you like what you've read, reach out.

I do review books I'm reading now, but I've borrowed Katherine Arden's policy which is to give everything I like 5 stars, and if a book didn't grab me, I don't review it. It takes a lot to write a novel, so if you've done that much, full marks -- we

I was the agent of destruction, and had I ended my own life, the world would have been spared, but I wouldn't have done it, even if I'd known -- that was the worst thing. (less)

I've never gotten over the magic of leaving the Shire on my broken down pony and embarking on an adventure with that quality of deep mystery, not knowing what wonders, and horrors, lie in store. What would I do in Middle Earth? I guess just what Bilbo did, and Frodo after him. I wouldn't stay in the Shire, or at least that's what I'd like to believe!(less)

Vasilisa by Julie Mathison
"Vasilisa the brave and Baba Yaga… classic traditional Russian folklore expanded to a story in novel book form. Imagined and interpreted while weaving the riddles and lore that kindness wins.
Much for me to take from this and latch into. ❤️"

Vasilisa by Julie Mathison
"A nice retelling of folklore, the narration for the audiobook was really smooth to listen to, Kimberly (the narrator) has a really nice cadence, and her different tones and accents went down really well!

Vasilisa by Julie Mathison
"I’m a huge fan of mythology and folktales; it’s probably one of the biggest genres that I read. I loved that this book was based in Russian folklore, because I feel like those are tales that don’t get told as often as tales from Western Europe. I’ve " Read more of this review »

“The wideness of the sky and steppes, the whiff of villages and men -- from these, the forest sprite recoiled, and so he hid within a rotten log, and his voice sounded like the crackling of dry leaves.”
Julie Mathison, Vasilisa

“...in the end, sleep claimed them both. Neither heard the great horned owl hooting from a hollowed oak, nor the strange buzzing cry of the woodcock, nor the keening of coyotes some two miles away. The wind kicked up from the east and roared in the treetops like a distant ocean, but neither...saw the leaves beneath the willow come to life, rustling and boiling, even as they sank into the forest loam. Roots reached and found and pulled them down, and - deep below - the bones of dinosaurs groaned aside, making room for their passage.”
Julie Mathison, Vasilisa

“Mothers have a secret source of energy, hidden somewhere in their body, though medical science has yet to discover it. The energy comes out in little waves that you can feel, warm and full of God or love or whatever it is that makes galaxies turn.”
Julie Mathison, Believe
