It took ten years to research The Calligrapher's Daughter. Mostly I read memoirs written about and from the era, and history books. I also interviewed elders, visited Korea, and found primary sources such as maps, photographs, and artwork from the era. The critical issue with incorporating research into fiction is to never let the research take over the story or the character. It must be seamless, embedded in character and setting, not imposed by the writer. Good luck with your work. Cheers. (less)

“It was pointless to worry about problems I didn't yet have.”
Eugenia Kim, The Calligrapher's Daughter

“It was incredible, this human capacity for learning, for hope, for love, that persisted like to box of light in my cell, the waters that flowed in my dreams. It was beyond my understanding. Tears came as I surrendered to this wonderment of being.”
Eugenia Kim, The Calligrapher's Daughter

“You must always think first of your family, your father, and put your own thoughts and desires last.”
