The City of Sun and Stars
No matter how many books I write, my feelings when I finish a first draft are always the same: relief mixed with terror and a smidgen of pride. Relief because I’ve managed to get my myriad story threads and plot twists onto the page in one piece. Terror because I have no idea whether the book will be any good or not. And pride … well, pride because let me tell you: this writing lark isn’t getting any easier!
So, Book 2 of the Mothers of Sorrow trilogy is finished. Or rather, the first draft is finished. Now I have to do a whole lot of reading and editing; then my editor has to do a whole lot of reading and editing, until somehow, sometime, somewhere, this rough hunk of coal becomes a diamond.
It’s called The City of Sun and Stars, and it’ll be released on October 2nd 2025. You can preorder it here.

Happy 4th Birthday to me!

Four years ago today I released my first self-published book, The Broken Heart of Arelium. It started as a side project, really. I had been living in France for so long that I was starting to lose my English, especially my written English, as most of my days were spent writing and conversing in French. So, I decided to do something about it.
My love for fantasy goes all the way back to the late eighties (yes, I’m old), with authors such as Gemmell, Eddings, Moorcock, Brooks, and Weiss & Hickman moulding much of my early forays into the genre. Something I love about these books is that they’re lightning-fast, action-packed reads that nevertheless manage to make you feel and care about their characters, even over a scant three hundred pages. I was hooked, and when I moved to France, Druss, Tanis, Elric, Sparrowhawk, and many others helped me get through the difficult period of adapting to a new life and language.
As the nineties bled into the noughties, I found it harder and harder to find fantasy that fit my tastes. Game of Thrones and The Wheel of Time dominated the zeitgeist. Long, ponderous, heavy-themed series that I still enjoyed, but sometimes struggled to finish. Then I got married, had two kids, and my free time shrunk even further.
It was when I was about half-way through Sanderson’s thousand-page epic, The Way of Kings (Book 1 of 10 …), that I began thinking about writing something that would scratch that particular itch for fast-paced fantasy.
The War of the Twelve is the result. It’s not flowery. It’s not overly descriptive. It’s short, sharp, and punchy.
Much to my surprise, a lot of people liked it. So, I wrote a second series centred around another of my hobbies: Ancient Greece. And last December, the first book in a new trilogy set in the War of the Twelve universe called The City of Mist and Tears.
Eight books in four years, plus a slew of short stories and audiobooks. I should be tired. Or satiated, at least.
I am not.
More is coming. Much more. Poseidon lurks deep under the waters of Tyrris. The Weaver plots in the monochromatic wasteland of the Veil. Aldarin is … well, you’ll see. There are stories bouncing around in my head, waiting to be told. Hopefully, I will get to tell them.
Of course, none of this could have been possible without my readers, all of you who buy and support indie authors like myself. You are wonderful, wonderful, people. So, thank you, thank you, thank you. Keep being awesome.
The Broken Heart of Arelium will be free all of this week (March 17th to 21st) worldwide. I imagine most of you reading this already own a copy. Still, tell your friends, your families, your loved ones. Or, if you hated it, tell your enemies.
And hey, if you’d like to get me a little gift, please leave a rating or review on the platform of your choice. I still read every single review and in the maelstrom of self-publishing, it really helps.
Here’s to another four years!
