“Their embrace is silent but fills in the gaps in the conversation they began long, long ago. Their tears join to re-create that uterine sea where their bodies formed, the water to which they have tried for years to return, seeking one another in vain.”
Lisa Williamson Rosenberg, Mirror Me

“What was the difference, really, between wanting someone to protect you and simply wanting them?”
Lisa Williamson Rosenberg, Embers on the Wind

“How strong they had been—all of them!—ancestors of today’s African Americans. How many of them had untold stories, legacies erased into oblivion?”

“We were on the verge of hope when our journey was halted, not by dogs or pattyrollers, but by fire. Our dreams hang stagnant for centuries, till Girl comes and stirs the dust. She smells our sorrow, hears our songs echoing inside her mind. For all her life, when she thinks of us, Girl's heart will beat in rhythm to one word:
Almost.”
