A road cycling incident turned Mark’s world upside down by inflicting devastating spinal cord damage.

Mark summoned the same skill and talent he deployed in the corporate arena to formulate and execute the best possible physical recovery, only to face the battle of renegotiating his identity as both a corporate professional and as a husband and father.

Mark’s determination and conviction have been strengthened and his world view has greater clarity. Mark shares insights from his lived experience with signature humility which have immediate application in both our personal and our professional lives.

This is especially true if they are going through or supporting something really difficult, but feedback from anyone inspired to make important sustainable change is extremely humbling.(less)

I fell back into writing by accident, and have loved it.
I want to share one recommendation and one reflection.

1. Commit to the process. The decision to sign up to Kelly Irving’s Expert Author Academy elevated my writing from an idea that I was dabbling with to a deadline driven objective. You may be able to achieve that same impetus by just publicising your intentions or joining a free writing community. Success loves a deadline, so commit.

2. It is so much more than the words. I started the process wanting to write a book to help others. I feel I achieved that. What I didn’t expect was how much I would grow through writing. It clarifies your thoughts and hones your insight. It puts you in contact with a bunch of amazing, diverse, inspirational people who welcome you as an equal. It’s awesome.(less)

“When it counts, you can be braver than you ever imagined.”
Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Belief is the heartbeat of your journey. It is your guiding angel. Protect and encourage your belief like a good friend, as you use every means possible to reinforce and extend it.”
Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Love connects us with our identity, our embers of normality. It encourages us, replenishes energy and enhances our effort. It gives us focus. It forgives us our failures and picks us up for another try.”
Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Embracing uncertainty is powerful in two ways:
Firstly, it allows you to find acceptance.
Secondly, embracing uncertainty broadens the horizon of possibility. Think about it in reverse: if we avoid uncertainty, we constrain the infinite nature of possibility.”

Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Your character is forged by the resolve to try.”
Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Possibility and uncertainty are intertwined. By embracing uncertainty, you let possibility be infinite. By keeping an open mind, and pushing yourself outside your comfort zone by being willing to try and fail, you create possibilities that are unforeseen.”
Mark Berridge, A Fraction Stronger: Finding Belief and Possibility in Life’s Impossible Moments

“Visualising somersaulting provides a nice way to think of resilience. It is our ability to sustain forward momentum even when life puts us in a spin. By learning how to engage the power of the tumbling motion, we can steer ourselves even if our turns are not always in perfect control.”
