Sure, it's sappy, but it's sincerely sappy. When I was growing up, South Park was telling everyone that aloof cynicism was the only way to be cool. But you know what's actually cool? Having the courage to be sincere about something, and "On Earth" is ...more

This book is so not for me. I picked it up because the premise was wild and silly and I thought it might be fun and funny, but my main gripe was that I hated all the characters. Their "sass" came off to me as rude. The romantic interests came off as ...more

The Justice of Kings is one of the best books I've read in quite a while. It's not necessarily doing anything I haven't seen before, but it's doing it SO WELL. In our increasingly enshittified world, this is a quality piece of work and I am here for ...more

Travel Light has a wandering whimsical feel that made me think of a mashup of Ursula LeGuin's A Wizard of Earthsea saga crossed with Howl's Moving Castle, and if that sounds just insanely positive to you then then you probably will love Travel Light ...more

Babel accomplishes the impossible task of telling a fiction story about words and their meaning without engaging in navel gazing ABOUT words. And not just about words, but about racism, colonialism, and communication. This is a big, bold book, full of ...more |

“I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. They know how many rooms are going to be in the house, what kind of roof they're going to have, where the wires are going to run, what kind of plumbing there's going to be. They have the whole thing designed and blueprinted out before they even nail the first board up. The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it. They kind of know what seed it is, they know if planted a fantasy seed or mystery seed or whatever. But as the plant comes up and they water it, they don't know how many branches it's going to have, they find out as it grows. And I'm much more a gardener than an architect.”

“The thoughts of all men arise from the darkness. If you are the movement of your soul, and the cause of that movement precedes you, then how could you ever call your thoughts your own? How could you be anything other than a slave to the darkness that comes before?”
