A reminder how precious our friends are and how fleeting life can be
Shout out to my dear friend, Elia Schneider, a talented film director, writer, and playwright from Venezuela, who moved with her family to the USA. She left us too soon, four years ago, in 2020, from a rare cancer. Elia was only 68 which is relatively young today with so many of us blessed to live well into our seventies and beyond! Elia's most recent film was Tamara (2016),the true story of a lawyer who became a woman, which was considered groundbreaking at the time.
While going through old letters this morning I found a letter from Elia that she had written to me three years after we become friends when our sons -- my son Scott Yager and her son Joel Novoa-- had become preschool friends at the Caedmon School in Manhattan where we were all living at the time. At the time, she and her family were still also living in Venezuela. (They eventually relocated to California.) Elia signed her letter, "We all love you very much..." and that's one of the things about Elia that I miss in addition to her brilliance and friendship. It was how she was so willing to articulate her emotions and feelings.
Missing Elia and my other close friends
who have passed away, including Sharon Fisher, is the reason I recently wrote
and published CELEBRATING FRIENDS AND FRIENDSHIP. We should never take our friends for granted!
