Kindles Present Endless Author/Reader Opportunities!
Remember the days when you'd sign a major contract, get a big ass check in the mail, and just spend a year or so partying like a rock star in New York or Los Angeles or Lincoln, Nebraska for that matter? There was nothing else to do because after all, your book probably wouldn't be hitting the shelves until at least a year from contract execution.
I remember my original editor for The Innocent telling me to "Take a break," at the lobby bar of the hotel we were staying at for Bouchercon back when that novel was first about to be published by Delacorte.
All that's changed now with the new publishing model which includes heavy reliance on Kindle and E-Book sales. It's no longer cool for an author to write one book a year or every two years (Egaads!).

Vincent Zandri: Sponsored by Budweiser!
Lately there's been talk amongst publishers, agents, and authors alike that E-Books might one day be offered to the public for free (ok, I know this is happening now, but I mean ALL E-Books). Instead of the reader paying the author/publisher, sponsors will pay in exchange for product placement inside the text. Since the books are read via electronic reader, readers will be able to link to specific product websites, and even to that author's own books should the opportunity present itself.
I wondered if a scenerio of sponsorship is realistic or if I even unintentionally mention the name of popular products and services inside the text of my books and more importantly, if I did so organically. In other words, do these products become included in the story because they belong there or because I might want them there in order to collect a payment?
Here's a small chapter of a new novel I'm working on, Moonlight Rises (the sequel to Moonlight Falls). Let's see how many instances of product placement there are without me forcing them into the text (I'm not gonna link to all of them because I'm a writer more than a blogger and I've got a lot of work to do...but you get the point!)....

Competing with the Living and the Dead
That title is misleading since in the world of E-Books, there's infinite room for everyone, right? Nothing gets remaindered due to lack of shelf space, nothing goes out of print because the publisher is either board with promoting your work or not enough pennies are coming in to support the support of your published novel. No book ever goes away. Nothing ever dies. Your spot in the E-Book store is just as prominent as a major A-list writer like James Patterson.
Or is it?
Lately I've noticed something funny happening. As the E-Book versions of my novels like the special edition "Sweet Dreams"/"The Remains" enter into the Amazon bestseller lists and/or the Amazon Hot New Bestselling Release lists, that a competition of a sort truly does exist. Real competition. And not just with other bestselling independent and established authors. I find myself competing with a whole bunch of dead guys.

Harriet Klausner on GODCHILD!
The funny thing about newly re-released novels on Kindle and E-Book is that you can dust off some pretty tasty reviews that went largely unnoticed when the big ass publisher decided to remainder the book for one corporate reason or another...So here is a stellar review on my new release GODCHILD from the very famous Harriet Klausner!!! And it's a dandy!

A Review and a Rant!
It's sometimes a little daunting seeing nothing but 5-Star reviews being posted for one of your noir novels. And believe me, that ain't no boast because I've gotten my share of "you suck(s)" during my time as an author.
But these recent reviews for THE INNOCENT are sweeter than normal since they're for a re-released novel that used to be called As Catch Can and that was so mishandled by its original Big 6 publisher back in the late 90s and early 2000s that after paying me a boatload of money and even after two pre-pub articles in Publishers Weekly plus some nifty foreign rights sales, the powers that be allowed it to slip under the radar during a corporate restructuring. Oh, and then the publisher wouldn't let me have my rights back for years, effectively placing MY WORK (my F'N BABY!) in a cryogenic state....

Are Lit Agents Necessary Anymore?
Every year a new surprise breakout author rises up from the ashes of literary despair.
In the past we've seen JK Rowling and James Frey fill the bill. But this year’s breakout author is different in some pretty remarkable aspects. Not only is she self-published, yet she works with an established literary agent. Her name is Amanda Hocking and she's a 26 year paranormal YA author who not only has one book listed on the USA Today Top 150 bestseller's List, she's got half a dozen.
Her kick assness on Kindle alone led the Chief Amazon honcho to officially declare "The fall of the paper curtain!" But it leads me to ponder something else. We all know that big publishers are no longer needed in order for an author to succeed in this business. In fact, we now know that authors like Aaron Patterson, LJ Sellers, Scott Nicholson, JA Konrath, and many others have proven that not only do you not need NYC to make money, you don't need a publisher, big or small, in order to make a very good living....like, potential millionaire kind of living. All you need is Amazon and the world's ever growing population of Kindle Kats.

GODCHILD: How to Men a Broken Heart Through your Writing!
Have you ever purposely set out to write a novel based upon your own broken heart?
I understand what it is to find solace in writing. I know what it is to find peace and escape. But at times, I also find writing better than even the best therapy session with the most expensive shrink in town.
What did Ernest Hemingway refer to as the name of his psychiatrist?
Smith Corona.
