Destiny Booze's Blog: The Smiling Pains of Novelist Destiny Booze

December 15, 2024

Fake Girl

Like the lizard that blends and the octopus that mimics,

I see the ways you adapt…

For him, For them, and yes, For you.

You dress up your smile like the milk snake’s skin in the colors of the coral,

Changing as you go to belong…

To him, To them, and yes, To all.

He follows the signal of the lightening bug without knowing his fate,

A segway to a cycle of passion before the pain, you playing your roll…

For him, For them, and For you.

And like the life of a fly, another relationship comes and goes,

Your tears spill alone, too proud to show…

To Him, To them, even To me.

But with the loyalty of a Doberman, I’m there,

Always there, on call if needed, on guard…

For you, For them, and yes, For us.

Like the opossum pronounced dead still breathing, you are my best friend,

And I’m the real me with you, comfortable and familiar, like home, but…

Not with him, Not with them, and Not with all.

The view of the hawk comes from above, taking everything in.

The truth is tragic for me, the real you was never the one with me, or the one…

With him, With them, or With all.

That stealthy cat pounces without warning, yet the mouse still falls for the cheesy trap.

Because we are who we are, and I thought you were my best friend…

Not his, Not theirs, and Not all.

My love for you is greater than the horse’s carrot and deeper than the whale’s song below.

Yet now I know the act you give is…

For him, For them, and yes, For me too.

And as the pig fattens for slaughter, I bide my time, for my cycle to end,

Needing to stay for as long as I can even knowing my fate…

For you, For them, and yes, For me.

Couches and Blessings

I want to live with an attitude of gratitude.

But it isn’t easy for me. Sadly, that type of disposition doesn’t come naturally to me. I have to choose to look around me each day to focus on the positive things in my life, and especially, the things I have to be thankful for.

Like couches. Lol. Are you thankful for your couch? Let me explain why I am so very grateful for the couch I have now and the couches I’ve had in the past.

About twenty years ago, my husband and I took in a seven-month-old Doberman puppy. At the time, my son was around the same age as the puppy. I had a Doberman growing up, and that dog loved me like no one else, and he protected me like it was his only job in this world.

So, I thought it would be cool for my son to grow up with his own Doberman side kick.

What I didn’t foresee was the separation anxiety our sweet dog, Princess, would have. Bless her heart, she really, really did not like to be away from her people. If left alone, she would howl so loudly my neighbors would call me to ask if she was okay. She would also shake and tremble with worry; she wouldn’t eat or drink, etc. If we paid for a sitter, she would still shake and stare at the door until we got home.

I felt so bad for her. The vet offered to medicate her. There was just no calming her when we weren’t home. And, to top it all off, sometimes she would chew up our couches. And, yes, we immediately realized we should have crate trained her! Lol.

But, the funniest thing happened. After we took Princess into our home, every time she chewed a couch, another one would somehow land in our lap. Someone would give us one, or someone wanted a new one and offered their older one to us at a super low price. Or my parents would gift us one for Christmas. I can’t even remember all the times we were offered a couch, but it happened every single time we needed one.

So now, guess what? Let’s fast forward to twenty years later–my son is now a young man, and sweet Princess went over that rainbow bridge years ago with cancer–another couch ripped a few weeks ago, and we needed a new one. My husband and I planned a trip to the furniture store that Saturday, but out of the blue, someone offered us a couch! (You must be like...really?) Yes, really.

There is no doubt in my mind this is a blessing from a higher power. And I’m so very grateful. Thank you so much!

I have no idea if someone will give me a couch every time I need one for the rest of my life, but you know what, I will forever be so grateful that this need has been fulfilled for all this time until now.

So, how about you? What needs have been fulfilled in your life? Pay attention, so you can count those blessings. Be grateful.

Let’s practice that attitude of gratitude.

New Release – Behind His Perfect Smile – Available Now

Hello Treasured Readers,
I am so happy and excited to announce I have a new book release today!  I sure hope you will consider giving it a read.
I don’t think I can name any one thing that inspired this one. Rather, it is a compilation of many different ideas coming together for a fast-paced romantic suspense with multiple mysterious and complex characters. I’m proud of the end result, and I truly hope you love it!
As always, please reach out and tell me what you think.

Blurb:

Ten years ago, Kenneth Landry killed twelve children in the Virginia Beach area. His wife was his last victim before he disappeared with his youngest daughter, leaving his older daughter, Michaela Landry, alone to face the horror and tragedy left behind.

But Michaela didn’t face it. She fled. She ran away from foster care and found shelter and a new life with a family on a horse ranch in Buena Vista, Virginia. An adult now, she’s left the nightmare in the past—until the morning she saves a little girl’s life and ends up on that evening’s news.

Everything will change in an instant. The past returns. A little girl goes missing.

Luke Ashtor is chasing the next big story. And Michaela is it. He’ll pursue her, her story, and her family’s legacy if he can keep her safe…

Because Kenneth Landry is killing again.

Excerpt:

Olaf pounced on the broken doll’s head. He always wanted to play. Even at night when it was time to sleep.

His little tiny body rammed the door as he chewed the hair on the doll, and the door moved a little. Like it wasn’t locked. But it was always locked.

Nicole stood slowly, and made her way over one soft step at a time. She hoped the door was open. She was also scared it might be open.

Hands shaking, she gripped the knob and pulled. It didn’t stop due to a lock. The door creaked softly inward.

Why was this happening? Was it a trick like Ian would play? A test?

Holding her breath, she stepped out of the room. The kitten followed, attacking her heels with its sharp little claws and teeth. It hurt. Nicole didn’t make a sound.

She listened.

The house was quiet. Maybe Sky was asleep. Was she home? Was Nicole there by herself?

She didn’t know what to do.

On tippy toes, she made her way toward the kitchen. If Sky was awake, she would be there. Maybe this was a game?

There was no one in the kitchen. Nicole crept toward the front door. She tried the handle. Locked.

It had one of those high locks. She couldn’t reach.

She quietly snuck back to the kitchen and got a chair. It was heavy. She struggled carrying it.

It slipped from her hands several times. The scrape of the leg hitting the floor was loud. But she didn’t stop.

She needed to hurry.

As soon as she reached the front door, she climbed onto the chair and turned the lock.

Open. She could go. She could really leave.

She climbed back to the floor and slid the chair out of the way. Time to go. Where was Olaf?

Nine times out of ten, he was right at her feet. He wasn’t there now. Had the scrape of the chair scared him?

“Kitty, kitty, kitty,” she whispered.

She couldn’t leave her kitten.

She looked around. Where was he? Was he hiding? Playing?

She grew quiet and listened. Olaf was cute and playful. He could be mean. But he was never quiet.

No sounds came from the house.

She went back to the kitchen, looked under the table. Then she tiptoed back down the hallway toward the playroom. And that’s where she found the little furball. He was back to chewing the hair on the doll.

She reached down and picked him up. Time to go.

When she turned back around, Sky stood in the doorway. “Young lady, you are in trouble.”

5 Stars for ANOTHER FIVE MINUTES!

The reviews are in…

Wonderful characters, kept me turning the pages.

Christine Woinich wrote the following review.

5 Stars

“This story caught me and would not let go! The instant attraction between Brooke and Scott was great but not the only pull in this story. I had to know what happened, who did it, and could not stop turning pages. I loved how Brooke’s deafness did not stop any of the story, love, danger, etc. keep her from doing things. Scott’s instant protectiveness made him a wonderful counterpart. From Brooke’s past tragedies to the current situation, I enjoyed the entire package. I highly recommend this story.”

Goodreads Review by Grady Harp

5 Stars

“…Destiny writes romantic suspense novels, and her concepts for stories are enhanced by the out of the ordinary characters she carves…Having created a deaf heroine whose live is lived in 5 minute intervals makes for a fascinating device for a romance…This is a stunningly original novel, well written and tense enough to satisfy the most finicky suspense story lovers. Highly recommended.” ~ Grady Harp
