New year, same me.
Writers: how many books have you attempted since March 2020? Personally, I’m at two and a half. The first one was a bit of a mess (but I stickered my draft very nicely). The second one has my HEART but I had to set it aside for now (although I can’t stop thinking about it). And the third is the rock I am pushing up my own hill of anxiety every day. I don’t even know why I’m posting this as it *looks* like I am not particularly good at my job right now. But writing is messy under the b...

ALONG FOR THE RIDE is now on Netflix!
A year ago today, I walked onto the pier at Carolina Beach and into the world of Along for the Ride. It was the first time I’d left my house in many months, so already surreal. But to step into into it, in my home state no less, made me burst into tears. I was standing there, embarrassed, when our producer Alyssa Rodrigues—who read my books as a teen and got this entire ball rolling—walked up and saw me. “Are you crying?” she asked. I nodded, sputtering. Then SHE started tearing up. We were just...

ALONG FOR THE RIDE will be out May 6! Watch the trailer NOW. :)
Y’all: I don’t even know where to begin. Just back from LA, where there’s SO much cool stuff planned in the coming weeks. I may have watched this, um, a million times. I also may be freaking out a bit (in the best way). I can’t wait for you all to see it.
Stay tuned!

Movie news!!! (So excited to finally be able to share this)
Okay, so I stink at keeping secrets, especially ones about awesome things, so I am SO HAPPY to let you all know that Along for the Ride is going to be a Netflix film! And—deep breath—they are going to film right here in NC. I am so excited. And speechless. And yet still babbling, somehow.
More details are in Deadline and on EW.com.
One more thing: we announced awhile back that Along for the Ride had been optioned by Netflix, along with This Lullaby and Once and For All. I am now SUPER honored t...

The Friday Five! (Just this once, because Nostalgia)
The Friday Five! (Just this once, I swear)
First things first: things are tough right now. It is NOT just you. Deep breaths, try to look for the good even when it seems there is none to be seen. I know I sound like a broken record with this, but someone needs to hear it. Maybe a lot of someones. We started online/homeschooling this semester, and let me say this: I value teachers more than EVER BEFORE. I have help with the learning coaching (I know I am very fortunate) and its still SO much...

Long time, no blog….
…and I *thought* about starting the blog up again, but I think that’s a bit too retro/throwback even for me. (And I love nostalgia!) Instead, a quick hello and an update.
So: hello! Hope you are all staying safe and taking care of yourselves. Please wear a mask to protect yourself and others. And be kind. And VOTE! It’s more important this year, right now, than ever before. Have questions? Check out Rock the Vote for everything you need to know.
In other news, I’m obsessed with all things Avett...

Need something to read?
Okay, so were still stuck at home, and the news continues to be hard to take. But can we talk for a second about the sheer HEFT of the new bind up of the Moon and More and Just Listen?
This, friends, is a brick of a book. You can throw it and do damage. (Not recommended or encouraged.) Its about the size of the Norton Anthology of Literature I carried around in college, although that had very thin pages and was held together with duct tape. This book, though, is STRONG. It will not...

Writing Exercise!
Hi Everyone!
Okay, its been awhile since I posted much, well, anywhere. And today we woke to a tornado warning at 6:30am and all ran to the closet to take shelter. (All is well.) What can I say, these are extraordinary times.
Anyway, Im stuck at home, like all of you, so I decided to try a writing exercise. This is one I used to do with my creative writing students at UNC, back in the day. (Its from a great book called WHAT IF, by Anne Bernays and Pamela Painter.) First off: you can totally...
