Richard was raised in the mid-west and was fully invested in electronics by the age of seven after receiving his amateur radio license. He went to the University of Illinois and later joined the USAF during the Vietnam war, where he taught electronics in the crypto field. After the USAF, Richard joined the Carnegie Mellon Institute and learned how to design integrated circuits used in microprocessor-based automotive fuel injection systems. Then Richard and his family moved to Silicon Valley, where he became the microprocessor engineering manager for a semiconductor company. Social inept?

I have been asked since Dickie was socially inept and didn't meet many girls while trying to figure out how the world worked, how did he get married so quickly after meeting Linda. I considered including those details since they are funny and totally consistent with the theme, but Linda preferred that I not include those specifics. Maybe in a later update.
