The book I found most mysterious, even while I was writing it, was Gabon. It took a long time to write, and I found myself having to write and rewrite the same scenes dozens of times.

The easiest book to write was my latest, The Ocean Liner -- and the reason was that I spent a couple of years researching and thinking about the characters before I ever put pen to paper.

So, oddly, both books took the same effort and length of time. One took a lot of writing and the other a lot of thinking. I hope this helps!(less)

Metaphysical aspects of breadmaking

I make bread every couple of days, sometimes by hand, sometimes in my trusty Panasonic bread machine. Even in the machine, however, results are hard to duplicate. Every loaf is different. Today's olive bread, for example, usually easy to make, would not rise properly.

It's hard to say why, because bread making is a combination of several disciplines: biology (getting the yeast to grow), chemistry ( Read more of this blog post »

“We’re each on our own tightrope. All we can do is pick one another up after we fall.”
Marius Gabriel, The Designer

“In my experience, the unmarried women are the smartest.”

“He turned to Isobel. ‘How about you, Frau Hitler?”
Marius Gabriel, Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye

“And the rest is rust and stardust.”
Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita

“They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.”
Philip Larkin, High Windows
