In addition to a career as a newspaper editor, publisher, and manager, Robb Grindstaff has written fiction most of his life. The newspaper biz has taken him and his family from Phoenix, Arizona, to small towns in North Carolina, Texas, and Wisconsin, from seven years in Washington, D.C., to five years in Asia. But I also have no problem taking time off from writing. Sometimes I have ideas that just need to simmer in my head for a period of time (months even) without me writing. Then when I sit down to write, the story can pour out.

Also, if I'm stuck on a book I've been writing, I will stop writing and start reading from the beginning, editing and revising as I go. That will often kick-start the process to continue writing the story.(less)

Great novels' first and last lines

Great novels have great first and last lines, as well as a few thousand great sentences in between.

On my publisher's website, I talk about a few of my favorites, and why I think they're important.

Wealth and fame, of course. Ha! Okay, just the creative process, and then if some readers tell me they enjoyed it, it touched them, moved them in some way -- that's the reward.

Ivan Stoikov - Allan Bard Never shave your beard and mustache, BTW! You must be very proud wearing them, that's the appearance of the Mountaineers, the only people who could become and train wizards in antiquity...:)
