Overcoming Fear of Coronavirus, Flu and Other Contagions: a Spiritual, Practical and Scientific Approach

There’s so much fear-mongering because of coronavirus. And while there is every reason to take precautions against contagious diseases, the coverage, and the scare is causing people to lose their minds!

Coronavirus word and graphic with NO circle/slash around it

There are a few things you can do to keep yourself as safe as possible from flu, coronavirus, and other diseases. I will share those and then I will go deeper into some spiritual teachings that might be of help

2Handwash

Disease Prevention 101

Wash your hands thoroughly

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the USA advise that the best way to protect yourself is by frequent hand washing. Wash thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds. You can sing a song like “Yankee Doodle” or something more to your liking. Go around all the fingers. Wash your face while you’re at it.

Hands Off Your Face

The issue with touching your face is this. If you just shook someone’s hand or wiped your kid’s messy face with your fingers, you are a disease incubator waiting to happen. If your sick spouse handed you something, you could be next, because you’re likely to touch your face or sneeze into your hand, thus spreading the germ.

Keeping your hands away from your face is another protective measure since bugs are spread through direct contact. For the most part, masks are only good to help keep you from touching your face! They’re not going to block a mighty virus.

Start paying attention to how often you scratch your nose, wipe your forehead, swipe something off your lip, push a hair off of your cheek, and etc. You’ll probably be surprised how often you touch your face and then move on with life as though nothing happened.

Be Careful When You Sneeze, Please.

If you need to cough or sneeze, do so into your elbow, or preferably, a tissue. Then throw the tissue away immediately. If you are out and about, you can bring a sealable bag (like a sandwich bag that zips or pinches shut) with you. Seal the used tissue inside it.

Think one and done. You can bring a sanitizing spray or wipe. I like to use On Guard because it has all-natural essential oils (from real plants, not a Petrie dish) and it’s highly effective. Here is a link where you can get that from me. Note that it is an affiliate link. Here is a link to coronavirus precautions from the World Health Organization.

No Touchy

Contagion loves physical contact, which is the quickest way to spread disease. (not the only way) You can avoid shaking hands and other types of contact in public.

Wipe Or Spray It Away

If you’re going on an airplane, public transit, or other public places, you can bring a spray or wipes with you to help clean up an area if that makes you feel more comfortable. You can buy wipes in little packets that are easy to toss into your bag. Wipe the snack tray, armrests, seat, etc.

Going Deeper: At the Confluence of Science and Spirituality

Now that I’ve gotten all the basics out-of-the-way, let’s go deeper. Let’s talk about the energy or vibration of fear.

Everything Is Energy

Even that solid-seeming device on which you’re reading this article is made up of energy, of atoms that are constantly moving. Everything vibrates at a particular frequency.

Have you ever been in a situation where you are afraid of something happening and sure enough, it does? Consider that you actually called the thing you are afraid of right to your experience. For example, if you are in a place where there is ice and snow and you’re afraid of falling on the ice, you are more likely to fall. The fear causes you to tense up and act in other ways that make it more likely rather than less.

Obviously, you want to be reasonable. I would never suggest that you eat rancid meat and imagine that you will be fine! I would never suggest that you let people sneeze all over you. That would be ridiculous. But I am suggesting that if you become fearful of getting sick and worry over every little clearing of your throat or every little cough, you are sending out messages to your body and to the world at large that you are mistrustful and fearful.

Science: All Living Beings Are Either Growing or Dying

Let me lay some science on you right now. This is true. It is not just some airy-fairy thing that somebody made up. Any biological creature can be progressing in only one of two directions, growth or death. Stagnation is the same as death. The reason I’m mentioning this is because when you are in a state of fear, this is moving in the direction of decay and death.

Think about anytime you have been afraid. You might have higher blood pressure, blurred vision, shakes, headache, rapid breathing, feelings of anxiety, or perhaps even a panic attack. Does any of that sound like regeneration and growth? Of course, it doesn’t! That’s because when you are in a state of fear, you are moving in the direction of death.

Humans are built with a couple of different ways we might respond to whatever is going on. One is fight or flight comma the other is what I call the rest and digest response. So, imagine that you have just eaten a celebratory meal, perhaps even overindulged just a bit. You are feeling full and stated. Your body then is going about digesting the food comma and you might want to have a nap or at least stay calm period if you get a piece of bad news or something frightens you, that food will sit in the pit of your stomach like a big lump. Everything in your body will then be going to defend you from whatever has frightened you.

That fight or flight response is really helpful if somebody is coming at you and you need to either run away or fight it. It is not designed for the day-to-day stresses of life, such as the potential fear of potential illness.

Living in a prolonged state of anxiety or fear suppresses the body’s immune system. Another little scientific tidbit for you!

So, living in anxiety or fear is literally bad for your health.

The Energy of Emotions

Have you heard The Beach Boys song good vibrations? They were onto something because everything vibrates, even emotion. Have you ever felt like somebody was sending you good vibes or bad vibes? Vibes are, of course, vibrations. The truth is that just as the molecules of your cell phone or your body are constantly vibrating, so are your emotions.

Consider how you feel when in the presence of anything that uplifts your spirit. Maybe you’re playing with a puppy or listening to calm music or meditating. All of these cause a higher vibration . This means they’re emitting a faster vibration level.

Now let’s take a look at fear, anxiety comma and anything along those lines. The waves vibrate in a slower pattern. Lower is slower, faster is higher. It makes sense when you think about it. And it isn’t just new-age malarkey, it’s science.

Fear is known to vibrate around 18 Hertz. That happens to be the vibration of a Tiger’s roar before it strikes! Consider the response your body has when in fear. You might have blurred vision from the vibration of your eyeballs. You will have an increased heart rate. Your blood flow will go to the extremities and stop digesting your last meal. Your breathing will increase, and its intended prey will experience fear, perhaps even a panic attack. That means the fight-or-flight response will be in high gear even though that sound is below the level of hearing. The tiger can paralyze its intended meal with fear, making it easier to catch! (Read source from The Guardian here.)

This is called “infrasound.” While below the level of human hearing at 18 or 19 HZ, it resonates at the same rate of the human eyeball and also can cause many of the physical fear responses, headaches, nausea, etc.  You can read an interesting article about that here.

No, viri (the real plural of viruses) do not emit infrasound, but I mentioned it to help you understand the power of energies and of fear.

The Power of Fear

When you are in an anxious or fearful state, you can expect some of the fight-or-flight symptoms like increased pulse and heart rate, digestive disturbances, disrupted sleep and night terrors.

Is that how you want to live?

Consider the toll living this way takes on your entire system over a prolonged time. It’s just not healthy, plain and simple.

Emotions Leave an Imprint

Dr. Emoto is a Japanese scientist who studied the effects of various stimuli on water crystals. He has tested everything from emotions to phrases to various pieces of music. High-vibration music and emotions like peace or Beethoven’s 5th leave beautiful imprints in the crystalline structure of the water. Emotions like hate or fear and heavy metal music leave the molecular structure jangly and unpleasant.

Keeping in mind that the images below show water crystals subjected to various words and emotions, notice the difference between “You make me sick” or “evil” and “Thank You.”

Here’s “hate.”

It distorts the water crystal in hideous ways.

No thanks!

Now, “love.”

These effects are from sending or meditating on these words in the presence of the water.

This fascinates me. If you want to know more, go to Dr. Emoto’s website at www.hado.net.

Vibrating with Emotion

Did you ever walk into a room or see a friend and feel overwhelmed by their sadness or sense that they were mad and you’d better steer clear? We’re all sending our emotions all over the place.

As an empath, I am (unfortunately) tuned to it, so I pick up on emotions and physical pain. But most people will pick up strong emotions based on facial expression, body language, or other signs, even without getting the added emotional hit.

Are You Scared in Public?

If you act afraid every time you ride the city bus or go to the grocery store, you’re harming your immune system.

Firstly, fear comes from the “lizard brain” – the most primitive part of the brain, which is pure survival instinct without reason or thought. Compound that with the fact that living in gut-gnawing fear releases a stress hormone called cortisol. Not only does cortisol contribute to the fear, it tends to promote belly fat, which none of us needs.

You might have noticed that when you’re under a lot of stress, whether from test anxiety, family issues, problems at work, relationship problems, or whatever else, you’re run down and more susceptible to getting sick.

“Anxiety has a complicated relationship with the immune system, and unfortunately, there is some evidence that too much anxiety can actually weaken the immune system dramatically. It can put a stress on the body which in turn releases a stress hormone called cortisol.” – SOURCE

In other words, we’ve come full circle. This is how you end up attracting the thing you’re afraid of! When you’re so worried about getting sick and seeing signs of sickness everywhere, you weaken the immune system, which…say it with me, boys and girls…makes you SICK!

Now you’re wondering, ”But what can I do about it? I can’t just flip a switch and not be afraid anymore.”

5 Ways to Combat Fear of Getting Sick
1. Take Reasonable Precautions.

Follow the guidelines from the WHO and CDC to wash your hands/use hand sanitizer frequently, avoid touching your face and cough/sneeze into your elbow or a tissue. My favorite sanitizer is doTERRA On Guard, which contains antibacterial/antifungal/antiviral essential oils that support your immune health and won’t leave your hands chapped and raw. You can get it from me here. (affiliate link).

4CoverYourMouth

2. Eat Right

Most people don’t get all the nutrients we need from food. These are called vital nutrients for an obvious reason. They’re vital. Your immune system needs all the help it can get. Washing your hands alone doesn’t fix anything any more than doing one sit-up makes you a world-class athlete.

At a minimum, I recommend you eat plenty of antioxidant foods. Those are all the nice, colorful reds, yellows, and oranges. I’ll break down the word for you. Anti means against and oxidant refers to oxidation. That’s what happens when you cut open an apple and leave it to sit for 5 minutes. It’s the body’s equivalent of rust. So antioxidant foods help your body be like the nice crispy apple, not te icky brown one.

If you could use some help in the nutrition department with supplements with science not stories behind them, I recommend Modere’s Essential Health Collection, which has you covered. You can get at least  $10 off for new customers here (affiliate link), plus right now, there’s a juicy discount. If that’s too big a step, I’d advise you to get the Antioxidant supplement also for 410 off for new customers (affiliate link).

3. Get Enough Sleep

Ok…do your best. I know most people don’t get enough, but put some focus into this, please. Sleep is the body’s best healer. Your body restores itself while you’re sleeping.

If you need some help with this, I highly recommend Wholetones Sleep (affiliate link). This music is tuned to the perfect resonance for restful sleep. My dog and I love it!

My dad only had the flu once in his life, and it was when he was working as the Master of Ceremonies and vocal talent at Mangum Chateau in Illinois (no longer open). He worked 2-3 shows 7 days a week. that’s hard on anyone, even when you love what you do!

4. Master Your Reaction by Mastering Your Mind

When you’re feeling anxious, ask yourself, “Am I in imminent danger?”

If someone just coughed all over you, perhaps you are at some risk. You can calmly sanitize yourself/the environment and move on with life.

If it’s just fear rearing its ugly head, you can use methods like these to  put yourself back in the right frame of mind.

Counted Breathing: Inhale deeply into your belly for four counts, hold for four, release for 6 or 8. Just focus on how it feels to breathe, such as noticing how it feels to expand your belly and how your emotions change after a few breaths.
Listen to music that uplifts and empowers you. I have a Power-Up Playlist of music I like. If you’re one of my email subscribers, I will gladly send it to you! Just email me or reply to 1 of my messages. If you’re not a subscriber yet, I’ll tell you in a minute.
Practice your favorite form of meditation daily, whether that’s yoga/tai chi/movement, chanting, staring at a candle, or whatever. This helps you tap your inner power.

5. Practice Gratitude and Appreciation

Maybe you’re getting caught up with the shutting down of schools, deaths and global issues caused by various contagions. There is no point in getting upset about what is mostly out of your control. Instead, start appreciating everything that is right and good with your world.

Cover of Extreme Thought Makeover by Dr. Rich Schaefer

My friend Dr. Rick Schaefer calls this a “Rampage of Appreciation.” I find that once I get started, the gratitude and appreciation snowballs and puts me in the most wonderful frame of mind! My story about a time I used this method to transform my mood during a rough time appears in his book Extreme Thought Makeover. His book is available on Amazon or your favorite bookseller. If you’re 1 of my subscribers, you can get a PDF of my story by emailing me or replying to any of my emails and asking for it. I am happy to share it!

Hold Your Tongue Or Set It Free? Book Excerpt from Paranormal Urban Fantasy They All Died Smiling

Do you ever struggle with your tongue getting ahead of you? Like when you say something and then wonder if maybe you should have kept those words in your head? That’s the challenge of communication. Sometimes, it’s god to be honest. Other times, maybe  not.

But how do you know the difference?

Main character Kassidy struggles with this in  They All Died Smiling. In this snippet, her childhood friend Russ is really getting under her skin!

No, Kass, you were great. But everyone wants to impress people.”

“No, they don’t.” I dug my nails into my palms. He was still just as ambitious as ever, but not willing to admit it. “You should be glad they like me. It makes you look good by association.” Now that was just plain catty, and I shouldn’t have said it, but I never said I was perfect. Someone rein in my tongue, please.

Someone rein in my tongue, please: Kassidy's thoughts while arguing with Russ in the paranormal urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, available everywhere in all formats

I think we’re all going to fail sometimes, no matter which choice we make. What do you think?

Surprises by Firelight Flash Fiction

This week’s photo prompt of a crackling fire made me think of Kassidy and Randy from They All Died Smiling. Not sure why, but it caused me to create a scene that happened before the book.

If  you haven’t read this paranormal/urban fantasy novel, Kass is the heroine. Aunt Beck and Randy are mentioned but never appear. He is her husband who dies in Afghanistan.

The fire crackled and popped.

“You two should just live here after the wedding,” Aunt Beck announced.

“i thought you were thinking of selling.”

“I was. Without most of the boys here, it’s big. But if y’all stay, I won’t have to move.”

“Before you decide things,” Randy said, “I have news.”

“Good or bad?” I asked.

“Yes.” He clutched both my hands in his.

“What is it?”

“We need to move up the wedding.”

“When are they deploying you?”

“In two weeks.”

My breath caught and guts lurched.

“Kass, I need you to be my wife before, in case…”

For Friday Fictioneers4 January 2019

Word count: 100

Genre:  Mystical

Big sky welcomes me, inviting me to play. Thermals call to me.  I take wing and sing.

Glorious sun warms cold mountain stone. I rise to catch and ride those glorious thermals. They carry me on steady wings. I sing my joy into the morning.

My mate soars over the ridge. Sun’s radiance amplifies her beauty. Wind ruffles her feathers. She catches my eye, dives.

I chase. I nearly grasp her. She banks and bursts upward. I climb to meet her. We enjoy this game often.

We spiral closer and closer together until our paths unite. We sing our love.

Craft Fair | Flash Fiction

Here’s a story I wrote for a flash fiction challenge.

Flash fiction image showing lightning

I took inspiration from Kassidy, main character of my paranormal/urban fantasy novel they All Died Smiling, which is available on Audible audio and in all ebook formats and print.

Craft Fair
by Ronda Del Boccio

I closed the trunk on its load of handmade home decor. “I should dig out the skates.”

“Skates? Why?”

“So you can tow me behind all these crafts. Or did you leave room for me to ride inside the car?”

Aunt Beck grinned at me. “It’s a lot. But there’s still a little space for you.”

I scanned the interior. “Are the Etsy orders we packed up last night in the car?”

“Yikes, no, please grab the sack on the table.”

I hugged her. “I’m so proud of you.”

“Thanks, Kass..” A tear welled. “This is all because of you.”

Treasures | Flash Fction

Writing challenges are a fun way to entertain oneself as a writer (and hopefully, the readers!) and to build valuable skills. I enjoy playing the Friday Fictioneers blog challenge. Here’s my story for the prompt from 9 August 2019. If you want to play, please do!

The Photo Prompt

The Inspiration

Visually, honestly, I can’t even tell you what’s in this image. If you don’t know, I’m mostly blind. Images don’t look the same way to me as they do to the normally sighted. Something in the middle made me think of dried herbs, and that made me think of pressed flowers, and that brought the story below to life.

Kassidy Spence is the protagonist/heroine of my paranormal novel, They All Died Smiling. She is a war widow just beginning to try and move on during the action of the novel.

The Story: Treasure
Treasures

Genre: Mainstream story inspired by my paranormal noel, They All Died Smiling.

Word count: 100

I fingered our wedding rings hanging on their chain around my neck. Randy’s CO returned his to me when he delivered the bad news. I know it’s time to lay these aside and move on, but it’s hard.

I opened the wooden box and poured through our treasures. It held the promise ring he gave me in high school, the single rose from my wedding bouquet that I pressed and laminated, county fair ticket stubs, my prize-winning pie recipe, and now, our rings.

Randy wrote, “I love you forever!” on one of the stubs.

“I love you forever to, Randy.”

Passports, Please | Memoir

This memoir is for a flash fiction challenge. Yeah, I know…a memoir isn’t fiction. Everything in this happened, but, well, it fit the prompt, and Flash fiction image showing lightningit’s precisely where my mind went. Anyone’s welcome to come play Friday Fictioneers blog challenge! The Inspiration

I rode a hydroplaneone round-trip between Spain and Tangiers. It was the only good part of the day there. I ut the shoes I wore back at the hotel.

The Story: Passports, Please

by Ronda Del bocco

Genre: Memoir

Word count: 100

I loved bouncing over the waves in the hydroplane my 4th-year Spanish class rode from Spain to Tangiers…

Until they took our passports. I didn’t want to surrender mine.

“If you don’t give them your passport, you can’t come,” my teacher explained.

“What if something happens? What if they sell our passports or something? Then we won’t be able to go home.”

“Don’t worry so much.” She waved a dismissive hand.

We saw rats big enough to saddle and ride, hideous squalor and filth. I ate nothing and only drank bottled water.

I got my passport back, but…worst day trip ever!

I Owe You Big Time | Flash Fiction

Here’s another flash fiction story, a complete tale told in 100 words. For Friday Fictioneers 1 February 2019

The Photo Prompt

The Inspiratioon

It made me think of Robert, the potter Kassidy knows in They All Died Smiling.

This is a possible future after the events of this book and the sequel.

They Al Died Smiling is available everywhere online, in bookstores, and in libraries. If your shop or library doesn’t have it, simply ask for it by name.

The Story
I Owe You

By Ronda Del Boccio

Word count: 100

Genre: paranormal

“I owe you big time, Kass.”

Robert’s deep voice makes me melt a little inside. “No problem. They’re almost done.” I watch as the professional movers cushion and pack his expensive creations. “I’m just glad you didn’t ask me to pack your pots. I’d be terrified to break one.”

“How’s Mischief?”

“Wrapped around my neck, purring.”

He chuckles. “She’d be fluffed and hissing without you there.”

“You excited for Powwow?”

“Yeah. Ever been?”

“I wish.”

“Wanna come?”

“Um… now?”

“I could use your help at my booth.”

My brain reels.

“I’ll pay. Besides, we have a lot to talk about.”

Paper roses | Flash Fiction Featuring Kassidy Spence from They All Died Smiling

Here’s a super-short story, 100 words, to be precise. It’s from a fun blog challenge called Friday Fictioneers.

The Photo Prompt

The Inspiration

When you write a novel, the characters really come to life. They each have habits, hobbies, interests, and so forth. Aunt Beck doesn’t appear in my paranormal/urban fantasy novel They All Died Smiling, but she raised Kassidy, the protagonist, and is mentioned.

The Story
Paper Roses

By Ronda Del Boccio

I set the groceries on the counter. Aunt Beck at the craft-covered table. Pens, paper, tape runner, glue, and more covered every inch. “Good thing we’re not eating in ere.”

“Kass, run this through the cutter,” she said, not looking up.

“Uh, wanna let me put away the food first?”

“Not really.” Her smile crinkled her eyes. “Need to finish these for the table decorations.”

I picked up a page of roses. “Let me save you hours.”

“How?”

“I’ll copy this on the printer so you don’t have to hand-color.”

She smacked her forehead. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
