The way things turned out for Old Winkle was always a comfort to me as a child, no matter how many times I read it. Old Winkle was a gentle, solitary fisherman who found joy in feeding the seagulls while the other fishermen mocked him. When the town’s fish vanished and hunger spread, it was the seagulls who guided him to a hidden shoal. By sharing his catch, Old Winkle saved the town, and discovered the warmth of friendship he had never known.
Rediscovering this children's book explains to me why I'm obsessed with the sea, and have chosen to live beside it all my adult life, and why I've been so driven to produce a work that gives Alfred Wallis the respect he deserves.
