Mystery, history, romance and more…

Alison Stuart writes historical romances and short stories set in England and Australia and across different periods of history. She is best known for THE POSTMISTRESS and THE GOLDMINER'S SISTER, stories set in the Victorian goldfields in the 1870s.
She also writes historical mysteries as A.M. Stuart and her popular Harriet Gordon mystery series is set in Singapore in 1910.
She lives in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and a geriatric cat. In a past life Alison worked as a lawyer across a variety of disciplines including the military and emergency services. She has lived in Africa and Singapore and, when circumstances permit, travels extensively - all for research of course!

However I have found that by doing some other hand, brain connected activity (gardening, needlework, jigsaws etc.)... it often allows the brain to just drift and amazing ideas pop up.(less)

I am an Australian so my natural inclination is UK/AUS spelling but I write books in an American market and American publishers and readers prefer American spelling so honour becomes honor etc! We like to think our readers are discerning enough to understand this. The same applies to “ vs ‘... that is a publishing house preference... my Australian publisher prefers ‘, my US “! And yes , it sends me cross eyed! (less)

Alison’s Recent Updates

Singapore Sapphire by A.M. Stuart
"This has been on my TBR for a long time now given that 1) I am Singaporean and 2) it’s a history mystery, which is one of my favourite genres. I’d generally give this 4 stars.

The author is not local Singaporean, but clearly has lived a number of year" Read more of this review »

"Terrific characters - the regulars are all very entertaining - but in this tale there is a superabundance of minor characters and at times it makes the plot bewildering. 3.5 stars. "

"A Surprisingly Great Read

I chose this book as a change of pace from my usual reads and am so pleased.thanks to It is reminiscent of a past PBS series, Poldark, that I loved. The strength of character of Kate is inspirational, and the courage and turn" Read more of this review »

“Thamsine Granville had not begun the day with the intention of killing Oliver Cromwell.”
Alison Stuart, The King’s Man

“Tom,’ he said quietly, ‘there is nothing I would like more in this world than to stay, but I am a soldier. I have a loyalty to my King. I have to go.’ A curtain of hair obscured the boy’s face and to Jonathan’s distress a large tear dissipated the blot of ink. ‘Don’t get killed,’ Tom said softly, his voice choked. ‘Mother thinks I’m too young to remember but I do. I saw him, all covered with blood, and Mother was crying and crying.’ ‘Your father?’ Jonathan asked, his chest tightening at the thought of what this child had witnessed. The boy nodded and looked up at him with brimming eyes. ‘I thought you were going to die too but you didn’t and I thought that meant you would stay.”
Alison Stuart, By the Sword

“He missed her intelligent companionship and her high-handed disrespect for him.”
Alison Stuart, The King’s Man

“I always carry the book of Holy Writ...and something to read...”
Elizabeth Peters, The Last Camel Died at Noon

“Matthew and Elspeth knew the Duke of Johannesburg, of course. Matthew had first met him some years earlier when he had gone to a party at Single-Malt House, the Duke’s seat. Most of us have houses or flats, but dukes have seats, which conjures up an altogether more comfortable set of domestic arrangements. Professors have chairs, which are not necessarily as comfortable as seats, but better, perhaps, than the mere benches on which judges have to spend their working hours. Least fortunate, of course, are people who have posts or slots—arrangements suggestive of impermanence and discomfort. To say of somebody that “he occupies the post of” is to imply that he has a place, but that he should not become too ensconced as there are others only too ready to take his place, with all the enthusiasm of the would-be stylite, on that post.”
Alexander McCall Smith, Bertie's Guide to Life and Mothers

“For the want of a nail the shoe was lost,
For the want of a shoe the horse was lost,
For the want of a horse the rider was lost,
For the want of a rider the battle was lost,
For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost,
And all for the want of a horseshoe-nail.”
Benjamin Franklin
