July 07, 1941

Genre

Gaskell was born Jane Gaskell Denvil on 7 July 1941, in Grange-over-Sands, Cumbria, England (previously in the county of Lancashire). She is the great grandniece of the Victorian novelist Elizabeth Gaskell. Her first novel, Strange Evil, was written when she was 14-years-old (published two years later, in 1957). In 1963 Gaskell married truck driver Gerald Lynch; and in 1965 their daughter, Lucy Emma, was born. (Their marriage ended in divorce in 1968.)

In 1970 she received the Somerset Maugham Award for her novel A Sweet, Sweet Summer.

China Miéville lists Strange Evil as one of the top 10 examples of weird fiction.

“Like all these long low squat houses, it had been built not for but against. They were built against the forest, against the sea, against the elements, against the world. They had roof-beams and doors and hatred--as though in this part of the world an architect always included hatred among his tools, and said to his apprentice: 'Mind you've brought along enough hatred today.”
Jane Gaskell, Some Summer Lands

“Will you not see?” she cried. “You are not as other men are. Why need you bow to a Fate? Can you not change it?”
Jane Gaskell, Strange Evil

“Yes – But – Well, it is yours to choose. I do not force anyone. Is it a hard choice?”
“No-o.” Judith shook her head. “Except that I do not know which to choose.”
Jane Gaskell, Strange Evil
