Michael Hebler is a writer living in Southwest Florida. He was born in Los Angeles County and raised in Orange County, California. He wanted to write compelling stories with exciting characters from the age of 13, having been influenced by Dean Koontz, Stephen King, and Robert R. McCammon. Mr. Hebler enjoys writing many types of fiction but finds that most of his inspiration comes from the thriller and horror genres.

Mr. Hebler recently took a hiatus from writing to explore other opportunities but is excited to return to writing this year (2023) to finish the last two books in his Chupacabra Series and explore some of his other story ideas. In 2024, he plans to release, RETURN OF THE CHUPACABRA: In 1990, after more than one hundred years sin

Hi Christine,

Thank you for your question. This was a concern of mine from the start of my first book because religion is a prominent part of history, especially during the Old West period. Every dusty lawless town had a priest or reverend trying to absolve the occupants of their sins. While my stories are not centralized on religious beliefs, including religion does add to the historical accuracy even in the genre of historical fiction. How I have chosen to deal with this sensitive subject is to keep all beliefs out of the narrative and contained only in the dialogue of the individual characters. This, of course, only works if your main protagonist isn't heavily religious. Thus far, mine haven't been.

I hope I have fully answered your question. If you have any others, please do not hesitate to ask.

Cheers!

"Stave," not "Chapter"

Did you know that Dickens' A Christmas Carol, though a novella, is not broken into "Chapters," but "Staves."

According to Webster's Dictionary, a 'stave' is a vertical wooden post or plank. I presume that Dickens chose to use 'stave' instead of 'chapter' as both a symbolic post to divide the story, but as to vertically stretch across the page like a bookmark, though this is only an elaborate assum Read more of this blog post »

Michael Hebler MARTIN STEBBINS (19) - Martin is the eldest of six children born to Werner and Betsy Stebbins and the only sibling old enough to remember living in poverty before his father’s furniture business flourished. Born in the isolated Ozarks, Martin made few friends, but the two friendships he formed, in Jeremiah Whiting and Alice Sampson, lasted his lifetime; the former becoming Martin’s comrade in arms and the latter become his wife. Never allowing himself to be affected by his family’s new fortune, Martin dreamed only of living a simple and honest life in the eyes of his Lord.

Michael Hebler ALICE SAMPSON-STEBBINS (18) – Alice is as feisty as she is stunning. Country born to a small Dutch family in the Ozarks, Alice had found friendship in two neighboring boys, Jeremiah Whiting and Martin Stebbins, whom she lured her into her mischievous clutches and consistently helped get into trouble. At the end of her tomboy days, Alice developed feelings for one of the two boys, Martin, which flourished into love. To her relief, her feelings were reciprocated in folds and the two formed a union of marriage before her husband left to fight for the Confederacy. Alice awaits the day for her husband’s return. Should he survive, her hopes are to start a family that same day.

Michael Hebler CHRISTOPHER HOUSTON "KIT" CARSON (57) was a non-fictional American frontiersman. The few paying jobs he had during his lifetime included fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and American Army officer. Carson became a legend in his own lifetime via biographies and news articles. Exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime-store novels. Of all his notable achievements, Carson's supervision of Fort Nichols' construction is the most relevant to 'Dawn of the Chupacabra', a stronghold to protect travelers on the most dangerous part of the Cimarron Cut-off of the Santa Fe Trail from raids by the Kiowa and Comanche Indians.

Michael Hebler ADAM JOHNSON (12) is one of the youngest sniper’s to come out of any Union state. At his previous age, Master Adam went from one of eleven Johnson family members to the only living. While playing alone in the storm cellar, he cowardly watched a squadron of greybacks overtake his family’s ranch then proceed to rape and murder his sisters, brothers, and mother on their front porch. To this day, Adam continues to be haunted by his cowardice, having ignored a faultless opportunity to save his gimp father from the soldier’s extensive torture and eventual slaying. Burdened by the weight of regret, Adam and his dead-eye joined his fellow countrymen as a highly proficient sniper in hopes of filling his bottomless pit of grief with Confederate blood.

Dawn of the Chupacabra

Michael Hebler NOAGUNUM “ATRACO” (age unknown) – This Pniese Indian was thought to have died as a young boy during the white man’s genocide of his people, but Noagunum lived to become a daring and skilled assassin in his youth. The settlers gave the nickname “Atraco” (Latin for “dark”) to their unknown perpetrator; not only for his ability to keep hidden in shadows, but for the dark heart he carried for any white man, woman, or child. Once too old to retain the stamina of a hunter, Atraco retired to the land of his nation in an incessant search for a curse that would cause their mass extinction.

Dawn of the Chupacabra

Michael Hebler WERNER STEBBINS (39) is the patriarch of the Stebbins family from English descent. At 16, he moved from Pennsylvania to Missouri to be apprentice to a carpenter, where his craft flourished. There, he met his strong-willed and often disagreeable wife, Betsy, with whom he fell in love instantly. Together they brought into the world four boys and two girls and a very successful furniture business. Typically, you find Werner of even temper until any one of his beloved comes in harm’s way. If you should be the cause of their harm, then you best be well protected... or run like hell.
