2015 - off to a running start

Sorry not to have written a blog for so long, but I've been away writing the next book in The Clifton Chronicles series. I came back to the most hectic schedule in the run-up to the global publication of MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD in a week's time.  The last ten days before publication are always filled with interviews and promotions that, strangely, I still enjoy.

After I've finished the round of TV and radio interviews, I'm returning to India for a week, 1-7 March; five cities in se...

Generous guests, deserving charities

This is the peak time of year for charity auctions, and last week was particularly busy.  It began on Monday with the Global Gift Foundation Gala hosted by Eva Longoria at the Four Seasons in Park Lane, and a star-studded gathering supported Ms Longoria by bidding £404,000 at the auction.  On Thursday it was back to earth in the Crypt at St Paul’s Cathedral - a magnificent venue for a function, but a very difficult one in which to conduct an auction. This raised £17,600 for Baby Lif...

A Tour of Bones by Denise Inge

Over the weekend I read a remarkable book, A Tour of Bones, by Denise Inge. Denise sadly died of inoperable sarcoma when she was only 51, but managed to put together this beautifully written book on the reflection of mortality. The book's subjet is not one which would make you rush to the nearest bookshop, as the main theme is a tour of charnel houses, but at the same time, you are given an insight into how this lady felt about facing death. Richard Charkin, the distinguished publisher of Blo...

Sir Thomas Macpherson

I have in my lifetime, had the privilege of knowing some very remarkable people, but few if any, greater than Tommy Macpherson.

Between the ages of 19 and 24, while serving behind enemy lines during the Second World War, Tommy won three Military Crosses and three Croix de Guerre. He was also a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur and was personally awarded the Star of Bethlehem and a papal knighthood by the Pope. If you think this is remarkable, he escaped from the Germans three times, survi...

New lamps for old

Last week, a reader from Canada sent me a copy of KANE AND ABEL to be signed.  Not an unusual event, you might think, but it turned out to be an uncorrected proof copy for distribution to the press, dated September 1979.  Naturally I wanted to get my grubby hands on it, as I hadn’t come across one myself for over 30 years.  I offered the reader a limited 30th anniversary edition, plus a copy of my next book in exchange, but he declined the offer, so I sent it back to Canada today. ...

Farewells and New Beginnings

What a weekend - on Friday afternoon I travelled down to Wittersham in Kent to deliver the eulogy at my old friend, Donald Sinden's funeral.  Of course it was packed out. Sir Patrick Stewart read a lesson, and Dame Judi Dench's rendering of Prospero's speech from The Tempest, reminded everyone why she is so universally respected as one of the leading actresses in her lifetime.

'Our revels now are ended. These our actors, as I foretold you, were all spirits, and are melted into air, into t...

No right to the Rights

I read with interest on Bollywoodhungama.com that Hansal Mehta is collaborating with me over a film adaptation of Kane and Abel, and has chosen Rajkummar Yadav to play one of the protagonists. In the same article, Mehta says how he had earlier adapted my book for television. Mr Mehta claims it was a 'game-changer' on Indian TV, and then goes on to say he's looking forward to taking it to the larger screen.  It's time to tell my Indian fans, and other English authors, that I have never me...
