The Happy Person's Guide to Memoir Writing!
Work on your memoir or personal essays in a relaxed, low-pressure workshop designed to keep you happy while you’re writing! This twelve-week workshop will follow a summer-friendly pace and gentle prompts and readings that will help you discover how to write about happiness.
Tension is the key to engaging prose, and for this reason, we often wrongly believe that we can only write about our most difficult experiences. That’s not true. Happiness can be just as complex–particularly in its precariousness–as sorrow. Joyful experiences can be just as interesting as harrowing ones. But how? We know, most of us, how to interrogate our pain. In this class, we’ll discover ways to also explore our joys.
The workshop will help you generate three new essays or memoir chapters, one per month. (You deserve to also have time to get outside to the garden, the beach, or a walk in the wood.) On the first week of each month, there will be reading and discussion. The second week will be made up of writing to prompts designed to help you focus on your happiness. The third will be for small group peer feedback, and the fourth for feedback from the instructor. Hopefully, this will allow everyone to keep up even with family vacations and sitting outside in the sun (but don’t forget your sunscreen!).
