Roumen Bezergianov is a psychotherapist working with troubled youth in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born in Bulgaria in 1976 and immigrated to the United States at the age of 17. "Character Education with Chess" is his first book, based on his use of the ancient game as a therapy tool. He relies on psychological and spiritual symbolism of the game and its pieces, story-telling and conversations that spring from such symbolism, to help young people clarify their values and build motivation for a meaningful life. ...more

I have had several readers from around the world contact me--in our age it is not hard to find an author's email--and tell me how my book has impacted them. My book has been translated in Farsi, Turkish, and Slovak, and is currently being translated in Chinese and German. Knowing that it will have an impact on readers all over the world is most rewarding. (less)

“The "aha" moment is a validating experience for your efforts and at the same time changes your paradigm of the world in favor of a more accurate one. Campbell simply says “it wipes out the ego.”
Roumen Bezergianov, Character Education with Chess

“In chess, without the king, the other pieces would all be "dead", so their existance is supported by the king, but they need to serve the king with their capacity for action in order to have a good game.”
Roumen Bezergianov

“Our uniqueness implies unique responsibility that we as individuals have in the world. It also implies an unavoidable loneliness. Here Ghandi’s words come to mind: “Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth.” We are all minorities of one in the sense of our uniqueness and loneliness. But in searching for the truth and the meaning of our lives, we “intercept” with others who are doing the same and our loneliness at least will not have to be experienced as isolation. And in chess too, we “intercept” with others in this common interest that is much like life, where everything we do matters, where we have to participate responsibly, and the more responsible our participation is, the more we feel at home. As such it can have a highly affirmative effect on the person, a sense that the individual gets: “Yes, I belong to this world, I am part of how things get decided, of how things get achieved. I share this with others.”
Roumen Bezergianov, Character Education with Chess

“Humanism is the affirmation of man as a free and responsible being. Nothing degrades man more than the proclamation of irresponsibility. Man is responsible, animals and things are not.”
Alija Izetbegović

“With no pain and no suffering, what is lacking is the important thing we call credibility.”
Alija Izetbegovic

“Teaching means to show a person that something is possible.”
Fritz Perls

“It ain't so much the things we don't know that get us in trouble. It's the things we know that ain't so.”
Artemus Ward

“If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?”
Rumi
