Justice A. Fowler is a Midwestern author whose debut novel, The Despondent, explores resilience, morality, and the complexities of human nature. Raised in rural Missouri, Justice’s writing blends personal reflection with themes of belonging and societal critique. Influenced by works like A Little Life, The Leftovers, and Requiem for a Dream, his poetic prose brings vivid, morally ambiguous characters to life.

Justice began writing as a child and honed his craft through college literature courses. For eight years I designed its world- the intricate history, the lore, and the distinct broken landscape of the Remnants of Liberty. It demanded so much of me, but even as I neared completing of the novel, one question remained: What else could I do with this world?

The Despondent is a standalone novel but the world it inhabits- The Remnants of Liberty- has so many untold stories waiting to be explored. Over the last three years in secrecy, I've been quietly working on two additional novels that take place in this world.

Together, these novels will form The Despondent Anthology. Each novel is its own standalone story, but they will complement and expand on the world I've crafted.

For the first time, I'm thrilled to share that I have completed the drafts for both of these upcoming novels. While the title of the next release is still TBD, I can reveal that the third novel in the anthology will be called The Sovereign and the Lark.

It's an exciting time for me as a writer. This project stemmed from a single idea which has grown into something larger than I could ever imagine. I can't wait to share more about these new stories and how they weave into the grand tapestry of the Remnants of Liberty.

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Justice Aaron Fowler I wanted to explore the human condition at it's most vulnerable point. What happens when everything falls apart? Who do we become when we face despair…moreI wanted to explore the human condition at it's most vulnerable point. What happens when everything falls apart? Who do we become when we face despair, guilt and loss?

I began looking inward at my own flaws, fears, and struggles. I wanted to create distinct characters who were unapologetically complex, reflecting not just who I was bit the parts of me I wanted to confront. Each of the three main characters carries with them a piece of my journey. Through the weight of guilt, the anger that rages in perpetuity, and the hope that flickers even during the blackness of night.

The world of The Despondent depicts a fractured society, lingering trauma, and an undercurrent of hope. It was inspired by The Road, The Handmaid's Tale, The Leftovers, and If on a Winter's Night a Traveler.

The ideas were also inspired by the struggles I've witnessed in life and in myself. It became a space where I could channel the questions and emotions I've always pondered which eluded me. These were questions I couldn't put into words until I wrote them down.

Eight years later, This labor of love, doubt, and persistence was finally finished. The Despondent wasn't just about creating a story; it was about exploring and finding humanity even in the face of despondency.

For those who read it, I hope this story offers reflection and catharsis in equal measure.
