Beyond the praise or criticism for the book, which is a river that flows one way, then the other, lies the shore of my characters and their lives. Visiting them there is one of my favorite things about being a writer.(less)

If I'm working on a novel, I might write a poem or a blog post. That gets my writing muscles flexing, making it easier to return to the scene I'm stuck on.
2) I read poetry or re-read favorite books! This refuels my word-brain.
3) I lower my standards! It sounds crazy, but giving myself permission to write badly often loosens the logjam. I remind myself that sloppy, boring, cliché-ridden pages can be revised.(less)

Book news — new novel in the works!

In Fall of 2022, I started drafting a new novel about an adoptee who visits her home country of Guatemala to meet her birth family for the first time. With ten chapters and an outline, my agent submitted the book, and by December we had a handshake agreement.

Now it’s official! Neal Porter Books will release SUNCHILD in fall 2024. I’ve just finished the first draft, and it’s on my editor’s desk. (w

“Come to the orchard in Spring.
There is light and wine, and sweethearts
in the pomegranate flowers.

If you do not come, these do not matter.
If you do come, these do not matter.”
Rumi

“Who knows? Maybe everybody's end isn't the day they actually die, but the last time anyone speaks of them. Maybe when you die you don't really disappear, but you fade into a shadow, dark and featureless, only your outlines visible. Over time, as people forget you, your silhouette gradually fades into darkness until the final time anyone says your name on this planet.”
Ali Benjamin, The Thing About Jellyfish

“Just seems like all parents start out thinking their kids are part of them, another mouth they've gotta make sure eats, another body they've got to get dressed. And then one day, our parents look at us and notice we're whole people. We're not a part of them anymore, even if they're a part of us. And for the ones who never really wanted to be parents anyway, that's probably a relief. But for a mom like yours - I don't know, she must've been sad when she realized your life was gonna be different then hers. She must've been scared when she realized she wasn't gonna be able to protect you, and that you were gonna deal with things she never did.”
Emily Henry, The Love That Split the World

“Feo wished she could explain - that the beauty of the world is itself a kind of company, and they lived in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. 'You can make the snow a kind of friend, if you know how.”
Katherine Rundell, The Wolf Wilder

“¿Qué es poesía? --dices mientras clavas
en mi pupila tu pupila azul.
¿Qué es poesía? ¿Y tú me lo preguntas?
Poesía... eres tú.”
Gustavo Adolfo Becquer
