Despite my disappointment in The Elite, which I still trudged through on a second read, I was unable to put down The One. It is for this reason that I give it 4.5 stars. My enjoyment for it was not quite as high as for the first book, but still quite high.

Bad things first: The book starts off feeling a little too much like The Elite, for my liking. America makes one more ridiculous choice, but after that we can start rooting for her again. Even Maxon seems to come back to her side, trying to help her win, even while he's not sure that he wants her the most. The only thing I really want to shake the two of them over is their inability to tell each other how they really feel. And since at one point or another they each specifically ask each other or tell each other that it'd be over if they'd just say it, it seemed to reach contrived levels. And America needing Maxon to say it in the first place when he was so clearly showing or saying practically the same thing, has always had me shaking my head at her.

However, there were many things to recommend about this finale. America makes many great choices during her remaining Selection tests, reminding me of some of the woohoo moments back when I was reading The Hunger Games. She proved to me that she did belong there in a way that she never did in the 2nd book and in a more impressive way than her triumphs in book 1.

Rebellion matters intensify in this book, and America and Maxon get their hands dirty dealing with them, even sneaking beyond the walls. They also make alliances and strengthen those they made in book 2.

The relationships between the girls get more complex. I quite enjoyed how the last four girls related to each other throughout this book.

Everything that was annoying about the Aspen-America-Maxon love triangle in book 2 was practically non-existent in this book. There was of course the inevitable reveal to Maxon, but it was far better handled than I had feared based on the previous novel. I was quite satisfied with how the triangle played out.

And of course we get to find out who Maxon selects: Kriss or America?

Other notes: There was a "holy shit" moment in the climax that I was just floored by. A lot of people don't make it to the end. Some are a matter of convenience, others were very sad.

Recommended for fans of: The Selection, MCs that really come into their own after floundering, satisfying finales, books about matchmaking reality shows, the pre-games portion of The Hunger Games, a little Cinderella, stakes intensifying throughout a series, bittersweet endings, crazy names. ...more "
