I am a Dutch fantasy author. The characters in my books are not acting as a hero, neither as a villain. They all play their part in the obscure between good and evil. The female characters that play an important role in the epic sagas are strong willed and show a great psychological and emotional depth.
I have published eight books to date of which four of them have been translated into English. My curiosity leads me to explore new parts of the ever-growing world in which my stories are situated. More tales are to be told.

Of course, I love to read as well. I'm a huge fan of Robin Hobb, Michael J. Sullivan and artists like John Howe, Benjamin Lacombe and Iris Compiet. ...more

How do you get inspired to write?

All these ideas for stories have to come from something, so people want to know where from. Especially when you write about skin changers, magic and non-existing worlds.

But the more I write, the more I’m unable to answer that question. For Hydrhaga I can tell you exactly where it came from, even when you ask about some specific chapters. For the Lilith-trilogy it becomes a little harder. And if you ask me the same question about Hunter, I can’t really tell you. So I answer: ‘From everything around me, really.’

But don’t you need inspiration to write? Without inspiration, some people don’t even open their notebook or laptop.
No, I don’t need it to be able to write. I just sit down, put my fingers on the keyboard and start doing it. Even if I don’t have a clue about what I’m going to write. I need inspiration to start a story, not to continue it. Because once I’ve started I have to obey the rules of my world. Once I created the characters, I can’t control their behaviour. I only have to think about what would logically happen in the story to bring it to the end I have in mind and let the characters react the way they are. The more I write about the same world, the less inspiration I need.

So a better question to ask this writer would be: ‘What was the reason to write this story?’ My answer will be much more interesting.(less)
