'This Land of Monsters' review
This Land of MonstersThe Walking Dead, taken to the next level.
This Land of Monsters was a very easy book to get hooked on. It starts out following two people, an abusive stepfather and a stepson trying to stay out of his way as they make their way through the (Z word) apocalypse. Very quickly you see the relationship between stepfather and stepson. Their personalities show very soon as well. This relationship carries a good part of the tension in this book.
Mr. Gabrielle’s take on (Z word’s) is unique as well, with them classified into two types, fast and dangerous (howlers), and slow and harmless (slowpokes).
This book plays out very similar to an episode of the walking dead. Two survivors run across a community and are welcomed, but then danger comes lurking and they must defend their newfound home.
Relationships are what drive this story, making you care for the people you meet and worry about their safety.
There’s intrigue, suspense, and downright terror to be had as this story unfolds. Mr. Gabrielle even introduced a new element into the (Z word) genre which made the cold, calculating, villain that much more despicable.
What I liked.
The focus on characters, creating empathy with them made the story stronger.
The intrigue and tension were played very well.
The new twist on the (Z word) genre.
Interesting variations on the Z word.
What I disliked.
This was a fast read even though it was over 300 pages. I found myself wanting a sequel.
Secondary characters seemed like cannon fodder, Not given much ‘screen time’.
If you like The Walking Dead or any other books, shows, or movies in the (Z word) genre, you should read this book.
