EXCERPT FROM NINE, THE TALE OF KEVIN CLEARWATER

“Nine. They call me Nine.”
The rumble in his voice trembles along my spine and I stay statue still to keep from shivering.
“Like the number?” I ask.
“Nine, like the number, but that’s not the reason for the name. Guess again.” If his grin gets any bigger it’s going to slide right off his face.
I twist my lips. “Uh…like nine-millimeter? You in a gang or something?”
He shakes his head slowly, gently sucking on his thick lower lip.
“Nine…is your lucky number?” I try again.
“You can say that, but still no.”
“Nine, lives? Like a cat?”
“That’s what I tell people sometimes, in respectable situations, but still, no.”
“Why can’t you tell—” I begin to ask. I stop as a thought forms in the back of my mind.
“You’ll get it. In three, two…” His voice trails off.
The thought finally makes its way to the front of my brain and trips, falling face first into my consciousness.
Without thinking, my eyes drop to his crotch.
“One.” He chuckles.
My cheeks burn. My skin suddenly feels too tight.
“I…I…” I’m tongue-tied. Words are something I’m never at a loss for, but this man has managed to steal them away without much effort at all in only a few minutes.
“But, it’s not true,” he says, leaning over me with his elbow against the wall right beside my very red cheek. His nearness is like a morning fog, clouding my thoughts with his masculine, clean scent and the heat radiating from inside his jacket.
I’m relieved, disappointed and confused as all hell why I even care about what this stranger is packing between his muscular thighs.
“It’s not?” I ask breathlessly.
He reaches out and tips my chin up. My lingering gaze is forced to leave his crotch, locking on his gleaming eyes.
He smirks. “No.”
The breath from his words stroke across my jaw like a soft caress. I have to stop myself from leaning into his palm and rubbing my face against it like a cat begging to be pet.
He lowers his voice to a whisper. “It’s bigger.”
