Hester Browne was born in England's Lake District, read English at Trinity College, Cambridge, and worked as a fiction editor before leaving publishing to write full time. She enjoys Scottish reeling, driving, baking, and trawling eBay for estate sale bargains. She doesn't enjoy hot weather, tax returns, or any talent programme where people have to plead to be allowed to juggle flaming chainsaws on national television. ...more

That's a very interesting question... I think it's a bit of both. When I start off, I usually need to have one big plot idea, a 'what would happen if...?' situation (what if... you had to update a finishing school for modern times? You were a wedding planner who didn't believe in love?), plus a central character with one big characteristic which basically guides her reactions, as in Melissa Romney Jones's sunny practicality, or Evie's passion for the past. It helps if the two ideas clash with each other - as when shy, messy Amy Wilde the gardener is unwillingly propelled into the spotlight when her boyfriend turns out to be a prince and suddenly everyone's looking at her chipped nails and split ends.

Once those two poles are in place, the action and the characters usually guide each other - if inspiration slows, I think, how would I react if...? or what's the worst thing that could happen now...? and the ideas spark off!(less)

Here are some reasons to read The Runaway Princess, out now!!

Like nearly everyone I know, I'm absolutely fascinated by the gradual transformation of Kate Middleton into a real Duchess - and also the polite 'no' that Chelsy Davy gave the whole royal gig. Being a princess in the 21st century is so far removed from the 'annual childbirth and a little light state banqueting' deal of previous generations that it's more like applying for a top level job, with the Read more of this blog post »

“The best friendships are like mobile phones, I think--you can't explain exactly how they work, but you're just relieved they do.”
Hester Browne, Little Lady, Big Apple

“The Elephant of Depression wasn't just parked on my chest, it was relaxing there with the Walrus of Gloom and the Hippo of Bleak Friday Nights in Alone. They had beers. They were settling in.”
Hester Browne

“There are many marks of a true lady but I believe that one of them is to walk with her head held high while her world falls apart around her.”
Hester Browne, The Little Lady Agency
