I grew up in Darien, Connecticut and started writing stories when I was eight. Although I always loved to write, I never imagined I could make a living as a fiction writer, so in college I majored in journalism. After working in magazine publishing for a few years, I went back to school to become a lawyer. While working as an attorney, I enrolled in an evening fiction writing class at a nearby university in Connecticut. I wrote "on the side," at night and on weekends, and several of my short stories were published in literary magazines. Finally, I took the big leap and wrote my first novel, The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe, which was turned into a movie called The Irresistible Blueberry Farm for the Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Cha ...more

Darcy is such a brooding and serious guy and you just know he needs a woman who can lift his spirits and bring laughter and excitement into his days, as well as smart conversation of course. Elizabeth is so intelligent and dynamic (and a good piano player at a party, which should be a lesson to all of us who gave up on music lessons too soon), but she needs a man who can provide her with emotional strength and solidity, not to mention a decent bank account. Throw in an assortment of obstacles and oddball characters, and you have the perfect five-star romance. I also love Lucy Honeychurch and George Emerson from A Room with a View. Interview with a Writer’s Assistant

Interview with a Writer’s Assistant

We recently sat down for a candid interview with Cinnamon, a Tonkinese cat who is the assistant to author Mary Simses.

Why don’t you tell us about your job?

I’m underpaid, unglorified, and underappreciated. What else do you want to know?

You sound a little irritated.

Of course I’m irritated. A simple, Thank you, Cinnamon, I couldn’t have done it without

“I guess that's the lesson in all of this-not to be eighty years old, looking back on your life, wondering if you made the right choice or how your life might have been different if you'd done one thing and not another.”
Mary Simses, The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

“I have many wonderful memories of this days we had together. It would make me happy to know that at least a few of your memories of me are good ones. I wonder if you ever think about sitting under that oak tree, with the cicadas buzzing, and, at night, the crickets. Or how the ice used to cover the blueberry bushes in the winter, giving them that dreamy look. Or how we used to sell the pies for your mother at the roadside stand.
I still think of you whenever I see blueberries.”
Mary Simses, The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

“Her walk-in closet greeted me with the smell of lavender. Hanging rods held Chanel suits and sale-rack department store dresses side by side. Shelves displayed sweaters of every color from peach to cranberry. I brushed my hand over a pink sweater. The cashmere was soft as a cloud.”
Mary Simses, The Irresistible Blueberry Bakeshop & Cafe

Mary Simses I've been reading On Mexican Time, a memoir by Tony Cohan. It's a lovely book, full of beautiful descrptions of Mexico and really wonderful writing. If you're looking for a page-turner, however, just know that this isn't it. It's slow paced - like life down there - and you just have to appreciate all of its nuances. I was reading the electronic version on my iPad and one day last week I opened the iPad and saw that the glass had shattered. After giving myself a new ipad for my birthday (what an excuse) the internet cable going to our house was accidentally cut by some people doing work outside. So I was without the book for about a week. I'm finally getting everything back together now and am anxious to finish it.

I'm still such a neophyte with goodreads - I just realized I had messages here on my profile! Thanks for your note. I hope you like the book. And I hope you will check out my Facebook page, as I've posted photos I've taken and some bits and pieces about my writing. Most of the photos so far are of Maine - the location of my book. They're making me long for summer in the northeast!

Mary Simses Patricia wrote: "Hi Mary! I can't wait to read your book. I'm very excited about the synopsis and I loved the cover. :)"

Thanks, Patricia! I'm so glad you like the cover. The original cover was a painting of a bakery window with a woman walking by in profile. It was really lovely but the publisher has second thoughts and decided to go with a completely different approach. I think it was a great decision as I love the new cover. I hope you will enjoy the book!
