There are also some elements of Harry Potter in here (definitely not a carbon copy by any means - just an obvious comparison because of the magic school, camaraderie in the dorms, and colorful instructors).

The story centers on Ryiah,a 15-year-old girl who has been accepted into the Academy, a school for mages, along with her twin brother Alex. There are three different factions of mages: Alchemy (basically mixing magic potions), Restoration (healing), and Combat. There are over 100 first years at the Academy. Only 15 - 5 from each faction - will be accepted as apprentices and invited back for a second year. Cue panicking amongst the masses, bullying, backstabbing and hazing galore. You know, typical school stuff.

Ryiah is interested in Combat - which is the most competitive faction by far. She's also at a disadvantage because she comes from a humble background. The majority of first years are wealthy nobles, and there's a clear divide between the commoners and the aristocracy.

Leading the divide is the "un-heir" - Prince Darren, a pompous but admittedly extremeley talented young man, the first royal to ever be accepted into the Academy. For much of the book, I was torn between wanting to wring Darren's neck and wanting to make out with him (or at least live vicariously through Ryiah). It's unclear for most of the book whether he's friend, foe, or lover. It's 100% clear that he's smokin' hot.

Much of the book is focused on Ryiah's personal growth. She comes to the Academy having yet to discover how to use her magic. She's leagues behind the other first years in everything from academics to fighting. But you can't help but admire her courage and sheer force of will. She's decided she belongs at the Academy, and despite some particularly mean girls telling her otherwise, she sticks with it.

I don't want to give any spoilers, but the ending is an unexpected and clever resolution.

I also really enjoyed the side characters in the novel: Ella, Ry's best friend, and her twin Alex (and the dynamic between them) were a lot of fun. Plus, I always think it's important for novels to show positive, healthy friendships between women (even amidst competition) and this novel successfully achieves that.

A few criticisms - First Year seems to be set in a medieval-ish period (judging by the technology and mode of transportation), but the dialogue sometimes jumped out at me as anachronistic. Phrases like "you guys" or "oh, yeah" seemed a little out of place.

I also could have used some more Darren/Ry scenes but I'm a sucker for romance, so...that's the grown-up, not-YA reader in me talking :)
