We are es This book is a wonderfully-written expose on the networks of power and influence that is hard at work to undo decades of progress toward a more just and equitable society, using a thought process that makes terrible choices appear rational. We are essentially witnessing a version of what game theorists call prisoner’s dilemma: One player makes choices that appear beneficial to him/her but, in reality, both sides end up worse off.

In this backward journey for America, conservative elites wield cultural and political wedge issues, such as affirmative action and abortion, to expand their power and to set the country’s political, educational, and legal agenda. The conflict between civil-rights proponents and the aforementioned anti-civil-rights network is aptly represented by the civil-rights hero Thurgood Marshall and his replacement on the US Supreme Court Clarence Thomas. The two sides have fought many battles but the winning record of the civil-rights side in decades past has been replaced by gains for the anti-civil-rights faction in recent years, particularly since Donald Trump and his supporters gained control of the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of our government.

Collins presents his arguments in two parts, with 10 and 14 chapters, respectively, sandwiched between a 30-page introduction and a 13-page conclusion in my hard-cover edition. There are 71 pages of notes and a 15-page index at the end.

In the introductory chapter, entitled “Hug-Gate and Other Hermeneutic Traps,” Collins sets the stage by introducing Professor Derrick Bell, who took an unpaid leave of absence from Harvard to protest denial of tenure to a woman of color, a number of far-right figures such as Andrew Breitbart, Robert Mercer, Christopher Rufo, and Tucker Carlson, the wedge issues (and sometimes non-issues molded into pretend issues) they promote, and “the conspicuous consumption of whiteness,” and discussing why the affirmative action debate is his book’s bull’s-eye.

In Part I of the book, entitled “The Last Days of the Civil Rights Era,” Collins recalls how the 1954 Thurgood Marshall victory in the “Brown v. Board of Education” school desegregation case and its 1955 follow-up requiring the South to quickly integrate classes, were followed in short order by the civil-rights legislation of the 1960s and the widespread activism of the 1970s. By this time, however, trouble spots were already emerging.

In Part II of the book, entitled “Triumph of the Anti-Civil Rights Movement,” Collins discusses counterintelligensia beginning to take charge of the US Supreme Court, when Ronald Reagan swept into the White House and surrounded himself with anti-civil-rights adherents and innovators. By late-1985 “a classic showdown between the civil rights and anti-civil rights movements had erupted, as 125 House and Senate members banded together to demand that [Lyndon Johnson’s executive order requiring that federal contractors of a certain size use affirmative action to ensure equal job opportunity] be left alone. By Reagan’s second term, the executive order was rewritten. It was all downhill from there.

In the concluding chapter entitled “Escaping Opportunity Deserts,” Collins reiterates how the seemingly-reasonable “color-blindness” slogan, combined with the structural inequity in our political system, allows the anti-civil-rights movement to advance its agenda, despite being represented in the US Senate by tens-of-millions fewer Americans than the pro-civil-rights group. For example, SCOTUS Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was confirmed by 50 votes, plus the VP’s tie-breaker, who represented 40 million more Americans than the 50 “no” votes.

Antonia Susan Byatt [1936-2023], nee Drabble and professionally taking the last name of her first husband, later became known as Dame Antonia Susan Duffy when she married Peter Duffy. She was a prolific writer of novels, novellas, short stories, biographies, and essays, winning many honors, including nomination for a Nobel Prize. One wonders whether she avoided using her full first and middle names to hide her gender, a la J. K. Rowling and other women writers who feared rejection by the publishing establishment and, perhaps, readers.

The plot follows two modern-day academics as they research the paper trail around the previously unknown romantic link between two fictional poets. Set both in the present-day and in Victorian England, the “possession” of the title relates to several of the novel’s themes: sense of ownership between lovers; collecting and being possessive of cultural artefacts; and biographers’ feelings toward their subjects.

Researching in the London library, Roland Mitchell discovers handwritten drafts of a letter by an eminent Victorian poet. Following up on his discovery, he teams up with Dr. Maud Bailey, a distant relative of a poet who was the love interest of the first fictional poet. Together, they discover more letters, which confirm a romantic link between the two fictional poets. Mitchell and Bailey become romantically entwined, creating two parallel love stories, unfolding in present time and in Victorian era.

Mitchell sees his discoveries as a path to an academic career, provided he can protect them from the villain of the story, an American academic who is into collecting everything about the prominent poet that he can get his hands on. So, mystery and academic rivalry are added to the detective work being performed by the two researchers.

An impressive feature of the novel is the inclusion of 1700 lines of poetry attributed to the story’s fictional poets. Here are a few lines from a poem entitled “The Garden of Proserpina”:

“These things are there. The garden and the tree.
The serpent at its root, the fruit of gold.
The woman in the shadow of the boughs.
The running water and the grassy space.
They are and were there. At the old world's rim,
In the Hesperidean grove, the fruit.”
