Movies, music, video games, it doesn't matter, I'm attracted to anything that tells a story. For a long time I looked for ways to tell the stories that were swimming through my head. I tried making movies and considered creating video games. It wasn't until about eight years ago, when I was in my late twenties, that I settled on writing. The process seemed daunting at first, which is probably why I didn't consider writing at the beginning. It took a few more years (and a few awful manuscripts) until I finished a project that I felt was ready for the world.(less)

Good question! I covered some of this last month in my State of the Cycle. http://blog.kmalexander.com/2015/12/0...

I am revisiting an old manuscript I called Coal Belly. It's a book I have written, rewritten, tried to shop, and then eventually scrapped in favor of working on The Stars Were Right. But, unlike the other dead manuscripts, this one haunted me. I loved its characters; I loved its strange world and its odd magic. I want to tell its story.

All that said, the former manuscript was old, and in the last five years I have matured a lot in my writing. So, recently, I decided the best way to tell this story was to strip it down to its bones and rewrite it. If you like swashbuckling action, riverboats, political intrigue, civil war, and magic, then this will be a story for you. As of right now, there are no plans for a release date.(less)

The Smoker Paddock

Every day, I have someone emailing asking where I’ve been for the last month or so. (That’s not true, but it’s a good way to start my first post in nearly a month.) Well, I have been busy! For a while now, Kari-Lise and I have spent any free time hard at work building out a patio/gazebo/outdoor cooking space/chef’s garden that I am calling our Smoker Paddock.

For years, when we lived in Seattle, I

“It's funny. That feeling of home. It's so temporary, like bathwater: the warmth eventually grows cold.”
K. M. Alexander, The Stars Were Right

“The silhouettes of Lovat now dominated the skyline. Nine levels stretching skyward. Five hundred meters high at its apex. Each level housing buildings of various sizes sagged on the backs of buildings below. Thousands of sodium lamps twinkled in their recesses.

Lovat was the oldest and largest city on the coast, and it showed its age by the haphazard mess it had become. Roads rose and dipped, elevators and staircases criss-crossed, and floors would end and then begin across the city leaving large empty spaces between levels.”
K. M. Alexander, The Stars Were Right

“The spectacle shop was old, long, and narrow, with a glass front and a small thin door that opened onto a somewhat busy avenue in the antiques district on the South side of Lovat. It was a quiet enough area, away from the rougher warrens, but not particularly elevated. Across the cramped street hawkers sold vases, while up the road outside a rug merchant's shop a man sold antique suits. There was also Dubois' new storefront to the East; he dealt in religious artifacts and trinkets. The shopkeep hadn't liked when he had moved in; it had somehow changed the feel of the warren. Odd folks had started showing up shortly after Saint Olmstead Religious Antiques opened: black-clad priests, Hasturians in yellow robes, and a few Deeper cultists dressed in their gray sackcloth rags. It had set the entire warren on edge.”

“When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live.”
H.P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu

“Life is a hideous thing, and from the background behind what we know of it peer daemoniacal hints of truth which make it sometimes a thousandfold more hideous. Science, already oppressive with its shocking revelations, will perhaps be the ultimate exterminator of our human species—if separate species we be—for its reserve of unguessed horrors could never be borne by mortal brains if loosed upon the world.”
H.P. Lovecraft, The Transition of H. P. Lovecraft: The Road to Madness

“I want to see mountains again, Gandalf, mountains, and then find somewhere where I can rest. In peace and quiet, without a lot of relatives prying around, and a string of confounded visitors hanging on the bell. I might find somewhere where I can finish my book. I have thought of a nice ending for it: and he lived happily ever after to the end of his days.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“The world is indeed comic, but the joke is on mankind.”
H. P. Lovecraft

“A good science fiction story should be able to predict not the automobile but the traffic jam.”
Frederik Pohl
