The Thursday Murder Club
The film of The Thursday Murder Club, with its stellar cast etc., is out and is dividing opinion. But what of the original book - was it really that good?
Yes it was - but it has its flaws as a detective novel. Read it as something broader, and it's well worth it. But I thought Janice Hallet's The Appeal was even better. A look at both...

Flash fiction: Fashion
The town's Member of Parliament is upset. The Faculty of Art and Design, he says, has become a hotbed of perversion and wokeness.
Or has it?
Subversion with style awaits him...

More flash fiction
I'm now writing and posting a lot of flash fiction - generally stories of between 900 and 2,400 words. They've been a hit with readers - in fact they've really boosted the blog. I think busy people like to have something short they can read on their phone on the subway/tube, in the bank queue, waiting for their takeout order etc.
Here's the latest one. Meet Ben the Whovian detectorist... and Louise.

Politics on the Edge
Rory Stewart's fast-selling memoir: Brave man's gripping expose of British politics? Or a posh boy's exercise in self-justification?
It's more complicated than that.

More flash fiction!
I've been in the flash-fiction salt mines again. Actually I'm not sure if you'd call it flash fiction or just short short stories. It doesn't matter. This one's a 2-3 minute read and it's a sort of love story; there is life after divorce.

Flash fiction
I've started posting the odd bit of flash fiction on my website. I find the discipline of short pieces is good for my writing. Here's an example.

On change, war and the passage of time
A change in my life has made me aware of time passing, of one’s former world slipping away, and of loss. A century ago, the First World War did that to millions. Two novels express those feelings with unusual power. Thoughts on leaving New York - and on two quite outstanding novels.
