What It Means to “Earn Out”
First, some awesome news: I learned recently that I Killed Zoe Spanos earned out its advance!
But what does that even mean? Unless you’re an author yourself or work in book publishing (and even then it can be murky) the ins and outs of book advances and royalties and earning out can be more than a bit opaque. But it’s interesting, I think, to more than just authors. As a pre-published writer, I was definitely hungry to know how it all worked, and as I often have friends and family ask me questi...

Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies
Hello readers and bakers! (And I promise you don’t have to be a skilled baker to make these fun cookies!) I’m certainly not an experienced baker myself, but these are easy and yummy, and if you’re looking for a fun indoor activity for this weird, weird summer (or for any time, really) take a page out of Anna and Paisley’s book and bake some Peanut Butter and Jelly cookies!
I loathe blog posts that open with paragraphs upon paragraphs of inspiration and process and photos before you actually get ...

I Killed Zoe Spanos Blog Tour Statement
Following several private messages yesterday calling my attention to allegations of abusive behavior and doxxing threats on the part of the Fantastic Flying Book Club toward a Black blogger and other members of the book community, I reached out to my publishing team yesterday to cancel the remainder of the I KILLED ZOE SPANOS tour, effective immediately. I believe the bloggers and other book community members speaking out about this and stand in support of them. Blogging is work, and it’s work...

Year-End Round-Up :: 2018 Debuts Talk 2019 Second Books
It’s the end of the year, the end of a decade. And for a handful of 2018 debuts, it’s the end of the year in which our second books made their way onto bookstore and library shelves. As I wrote at the beginning of my acknowledgments for All Eyes on Us, “Writing a second novel and ushering it into the world is no easy feat (said every author everywhere).”
But it can be done! And in the spirit of the collective sigh of relief heaved by 2019 sophomore novelists the world over, I spoke with four...

Brittney Morris :: SLAY
Happy fall, y’all! I’m getting a little teary because this is it … the final regular installment of Deubt-to-Debut! (Keep watching this space for a year-end Book Two round-up with 2018’s D2D veterans before the end of 2019! And I may very well be back with a Book Two update in 2020 too, cause that’s how I roll.) But … in terms of the regular Debut-to-Debut interviews I’ve been so thrilled to run over the course of 2017, 2018, and 2019, I could not think of a better way to close out this serie...

Sabina Khan :: THE LOVE AND LIES OF RUKHSANA ALI
It’s the first Deubt-to-Debut of 2019! It’s still a bit hard to believe that 2018 and my own debut year are behind me—but at the same time, I’m thrilled to pass the torch to the debut YA novelists of 2019 because WOW are there some incredible books debuting this year! And I could not be more excited to kick things off with Sabina Khan and The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali.
If you’re joining us for the first time, here’s what this series is all about: as a debut young adult author myself, (See...
